22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 19, 1988 The Port Perry 1.G.A. Belles resumed their league play over the past weekend with a victory and a 0SS, On Saturday night we travelled to Markham and lost by a score of 8-2. The girls played well and with some breaks around the net the game may have been closer. Scoring for Port were Michelle Ryan with 1 goal, Tina Soomre 1 goal, Denise Tompkins 1 assist and hard working Vicki Reid 2 assists. On Sunday night we travelled to Whitby to meet their representative in our league. The game turned out to be a very close affair as we @ win defeated them by a score of 4 to 3. On this evening, Tina Soomre was our hot shooter as she scored all four goals as everything seemed to go her way around the net. Assisting on Tina's goals were Lisa Francis 2, Vicki Reid 1 and Sherry Harris 1. Our girls played well under the circumstances. We are looking forward to our St. Catherines tournament at the end of the month and also a challenge match against the Port Perry Ban- dit hockey club on Feb. 7 at 12:30 to open Ringette week festivities in Port Perry. Curling Report by Scott Howey This past Saturday, January 16, the Business Women's Tankard was held at the Oshawa Golf Club. This event is a double team competition using the combined score of the two teams. The Port Perry team lost their first game which also eliminated them from the single- knockout competition. : . The two Port Perry teams were comprised of Debbie VanCamp, Susan Parish, Wendy Bentley, Vicki ~ Watson and Kelly Evans, Mary Van Schaik, Lorna Solly and Diane Ball. Scott Howey's team of Dave Roth, Glen James and Ken Jeffrey start play-offs tonight (Tuesday) 9:30 p.m. in the White Rose Nursery Competitive League in Uxbridge. Qualifying in the play-offs after winning a tie-breaker two weeks ago, the Port Perry foursome take on Brian Suddard of Oshawa in one semi-final. In the other semi-final Gary Grant of Uxbridge comes up against Lorne McLean of Union- ville. The finals will be played this Thursday at 9:00. Spectators are welcome for both games. This coming Sat. Jan. 23, the team "THE CAPE COD" Royal Homes Ltd. BY \ TRILLIUM CONSTRUCTION 695-3094 or 655-4483 of Scott Howey, Debbie VanCamp, Dave Roth and Lee-Ann Roth and the team of Don Beaton, Karen Parish, Ken Jeffrey and Laurel Griffen will be competing in the 0.C.A. Mixed at Annandale. Good luck to both teams. Steve Whalen's Junior Mixed team will be playing in that event in Sutton this weekend. Also this weekend, Ron Parish, playing with the Uxbridge team of Gary Grant, Randy Grant and Greg Timbers, will be competing in the Provincial Farmers Championship being held at Wallaceburg. 'On Sunday Jan. 24, several Port Perry curlers will deport for Quebec City for their annual bonspiel. In- cluded in the group are: Ted Grif- fen, Paul Griffen, Ian Griffen, Roger Watson, Ralph Fairman and Steve Mowat. The Port Perry Curling Club will be hosting the Business Womens Trophy Competition this coming weekend. Kelly Evans' team of Louise Haugen, Wendy Bentley and Mary Van Schaik start their first game on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. Spectators are welcome. ud \ LR prices a MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE OUR MODEL HOME The annual Mixed Bonspiel sponsored by the Royal Bank in Port Perry was held Saturday at the Curling Club with the rink skipped by Scott Howey winning the trophy with 422 points. Runner-up was the Paul Pearsell rink from Port Perry with a total of 40 points over three games. In photo above, Scott accepts the trophy from Tom Mullen, agri services manager. At left are Jim MacSween, independent business manager and Bill Coulter, Regional area manager with the Royal. Members of the winning curling team are Lee Howsam, lan Griffen and Sandra Liston. At far right is piper Foster Hanson who provided the appropriate music. Atoms travel toRic The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team travelled to Rice Lake this weekend for a tournament and returned as runners-up in the C division. Port lost their first game to the team from Tweed. Tweed scored first on a power- play but Ports Ian Shrigley assisted by Ryan Williams tied the score up also on a power-play. Tweed then scored a shorthanded us. Port played their second game against the Oshawa LHNL Bruins and Port came out victorious 6-3. Oshawa and Port played a see- saw game for the first period. Oshawa opened the scoring then Ricky Olaisen unassisted, tied the game up. Ian Shrigley unassisted, put Port ahead but Oshawa scored shortly after and tied the game up. Ryan Williams assisted by Ian Shrigley and Jeff Vernon put Port ahead again only to have Oshawa score again. Early in the second period Richie Tripp assisted by Ricky Olaisen and Graham Holt put Port ahead and they never looked back. Graham Holt and Matt Morris added insurance markers for Port in the third period with assists go- ing to Richie Tripp, Ricky Olaisen, Craig Laird and Ian McCready. This win put Port into the C divi- sion championship game. Port Perry faced the team from Manvers in their last game of the day. Manvers scored in the first period and held that lead into the third period when they scored again. goal and the game ended 2-1 against The game ended 2-0 in favor of Manvers. Port Perry did not come home with any hardware as luck was not on their side. The good forechecking of Daryl Bourgeois, Kent Taylor and Kirk Swain kept the opposition on their toes. Greg Thompson and Billy Zaparanuik provided some good leg work putting the speed on when J needed. Goaltenders Scot Prechitko and James Paterson made some outstanding saves and certainly kept the scoring against us low. A special mention to Billy Zaparanuik who was named MVP in - the C division championship game -- a well deserved award. Con- gratulations Billy. Port now starts their playoffs. Bantam H.L. scores Emmerson 5 Frank Real Estate 4 Emmerson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period when Paul Kett scored unassisted and Michael Toye scored and goalie Robert Ashton assisted. Franks scored the next three goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead after two periods. Franks marksmen were Michael Butt and Adam Danter with two, assists went to Doug Adams (3) and Alex Cramner. Emmerson scored the next two goals in the third to take a 4-3 lead when Paul Kett and Michael Toye turned the red light on and assisting was Jason Adam. Franks Adam Danter scored to give him his hat trick at the 10:10 of the third period which tied the game 4-4. At 9:27 of the third Emmersons Michael Toye scored unassisted which was also his hat trick. Frank continued to press hard but could not get the equalizer. This game was very entertaining and exciting. Swamp Garage 3 I.G.A. 2 I.G.A. opened the scoring at the 7:00 of the first period when Ken Smart scored and Neil Hancock assisted. Swamp scored with only 25 seconds left in the first period when Shawn MacDonald scored and Heath Hudson and Daryl Dutkewich assisted. At the 14:09 of the second Swamp connected again when Shawn MacDonald scored unassisted. Swamp hit the mesh at the 7:00 of the second when Dave Buxcey combined with Mike Bardeleben to make the score 3-1 after two periods. I.G.A. scored their second goal "when Chris Cooper fired the puck (unassisted) to make the score 3-2 in favour of Swamp. I.G.A. con- tinued to buzz around Swamp's net but goaltender Noel Lovering along with his team-mates held 1.G. A. off the score sheet. 1.G.A.'s goalie Brian McGill also played a steady game between the pipes. This game was a cliff hanger.
