Neighbours noticed smoke pour- ing from the semi-detached home of Olive Smith, 384 Rosa Street, and called Scugog Hall No. 1 freligliers at 7:38 am. But before fire trucks even arriv- ed, two garbage collectors who hap- pened to be working on the street, had already rescued two young children. - Phillip Middleton and Rob Brown left the garbage truck when they - heard screams coming from the house, and saw Dianna Savage, 25, (daughter of Olive Smith) with her two young children in an upstairs bedroom window. Mrs. Savage dropped four year old Sarah into the waiting arms of Mr. Middleton, and two year old Matthew into the arms of Mr. - Brown. Both children suffered no in- juries other than a few scratches "and smoke inhalation. Firefighters then arrived on the scene, less than five minutes after they were called, in time to help break the fall of Mrs. Savage. ~ Olive Smith's step-son, Robert Smith, was then removed from the smoke-engulfed house, and all four Gasoline tanker's wheel catches fire What could have been a major - catastrophe was averted early Wednesday morning when Scugog Hall No. 1 firefighters quickly dous- ed a fire in the wheels of a tanker truck, full loaded with gasoline. At approximately 9:20 a.m. on January 20, an 18-wheel tanker truck owned by Roy Curran What could have been a major catastrophe . was averted last week when Scugog Hall No. 1 firefighters doused a fire in the wheels of a Transports Ltd., of Richmond Hill, was pulled over by a passerby on Highway 7A, just a few yards west of the plaza. The truck was headed east. The passerby had noticed flames coming from under the tank, in the area of the wheels, and the truck (Turn to page 3) were sent to Port Perry's Communi- ty Memorial Hospital via gmbulance. Captain Bill Harrison said firefighters then moved in to ex- tinguish the fire (there wasn't much flame, but the smoke was extreme- ly thick) and it was in another upstairs bedroom that Firefighter Dave Ballingall discovered Olive Smith, unconscious, lying on the floor. He immediately picked her up. "and took her out of the house, where Captain Harsison said CPR was ap- plied. He said she had a good pulse, "but her body was red hot." He guesses that had she been in the smokey room much longer, the results might have been fatal. Mrs. Smith was taken by am- bulance to Community Memorial, and then transferred to Toronto General Hospital by air ambulance, where she was treated for smoke inhalation. Everyone is recovering from the ordeal. Damage to the house is estimated between $20,000 and $30,000. Firefighters suspect the blaze was started in the middle of the night by a cigarette, possibly lodged in a liv- ing room chair. tanker truck fully loaded with gasoline. Blazing A Trail We're not sure who the owner of this vehicle is, but he's been having problems freeing it from the ice near Honey's Beach on Lake Scugog. The vehicle went through last week and several ef- forts to pull it out have been without success. This photo was taken late Friday afternoon. Durham Police say they have been inform- ed that the vehicle is through the ice. Note the pressure ridge which makes ice conditions on the lake hazardous. Over $2,000 taken in two robberies Durham Regional Police report that two Township stores were robb- ed of cash last week. A Police spokesman said about $2,000 was taken from the office at Blackstock Country Hardware dur- ing business hours January 22. The theft was discovered early in the evening, and an investigation is underway. On January 19; about $140 was-- lifted from a cash box at Ives Florists in Port Perry. This theft also took place during business hours, said police. Police say they have a suspect already in custody on other un- related matters. No names were released.
