2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Janvary 26, 1988 Herb LeGard retires after 33 years Staff-Sgt. turns in badge One day early next week, Herb LeGard will be turning in his badge, revolver and uniform. He'll be leav- ing the station for the last time, en- ding a police career that has spann- ed more than three decades. Staff-Sgt. LeGard is retiring from the Durham Region Police Force, and his successor as the man .in charge of 26 Division (Scugog, Ux- bridge and Brock Townships) is Staff-Sgt. Henry, Raetson, who has more than 20 years police service under his belt. Staff-Sgt. LeGard is nearing the mandatory retirement age of 60, and in an interview with the Star last week, he said he has no regrets at leaving the job. In fact, he's very much looking forward to retirement. After a winter vacation somewhere in the sunny south, he'll be returning to this area to live and said he plans to indulge his favourite hobby--woodworking-rand likely play a little slow-pitch with a well known Port Perry ieam this summer. And he indicated that in a year or so, he might look for some kind of part-time work to fill in the time. More so than most professions, police work has become much more _------ _ complex than it was in 1955 when Staff-Sgt. LeGard joined the Toronto . force after a five year stint in the Canadian Navy. After three weeks of training, he was sent out to walk a beat. The fact that beat officers now drive cars instead of walking is one change in the nature of policing, not to mention .sophisticated com- munications systems, and computers. But probably the biggest change is the fabric of society itself, everybody that police officers must deal with on a daily basis from the criminal element to the general population. Police officers these days, he said frankly, are subject to a lot of abuse. While the general public is con- stantly demanding better police pro- tection; the number of complaints against the police is on the increase. Although he won't miss the stress, _ the head-aches and the hassles that come with the job, Staff-Sgt. LeGard said he most certainly will miss the fellowship and the camraderie that develops among police officers. After joining the Toronto force in 1955, he spent nearly 15 years there before joining the Uxbridge town department in 1970. When Durham Region was formed in 1974 with an integrated Region-wide police force, - he was posted in Uxbridge and later moved to the new 26 Division Head- quarters office at Sunderland. His successor, Staff-Sgt. Raetson, has been on the job at 26 Division for the past week or so, getting to know the officers and the new territory. He began his police career in 1964 with the former Pickering Village force and joined Durham when it was formed ten years later. He spent the next ten years working with the Youth Bureau in the Pickering-Ajax and Uxbridge areas. Since his work often took him to Ux- bridge, he's no stranger to 26 Division. He told the Star last week that any changes which take place when he officially takes over command will be subtle ones. But he did say that moving from an urbanized setting like Pickering to the more rural 26 Division will in itself be a change. For one thing, the motor vehicle accidents in rural areas tend to be more serious because of higher speeds. 26 Division of the Regional Force is a huge geographical area of just over 500 square miles and a popula- (Turn to page 3) SELECTIONS PORT PERRY'S MEN'S STORE 241 Queen Street -- Port Perry -- 985-8977 Going South?
