John Brown has taken up in- terim duties as minister to the con- gregations of the United Churches in Port Perry and Prince Albert. And one of the first an- nouncements he made to the members on assuming this post earlier this month was to tell them that he and his wife are separated and in the process of getting a divorce. "I don't mind talking about it. It's nice to have this (situation) clarified, to be open and up-front. with it,"' he told the Star in an inter- view in his office last week at the Port Perry United Church. When asked what the reaction of the Church members was to this an- nouncement, Rev. Brown said com- ments he has heard so far are positive and supportive. "I have had a lot of invitations to dinner," he said with a smile on his face. But he did say his separation last May was a factor in his leaving the United Church in Huntsville, where he had served for two years. Ironically, he said it was the older members of the congregation who more readily accepted the situation, rather than younger couples. He 'feels this may in part be due to the fact that a lot of families these days are seeing separation and divorce-- sons, daughters, nephews, nieces and so on---and this gives them a bet- ter understanding of what he was going through. The interim appointment in Prince Albert and Port Perry was ideal for him personally, just what he was looking for, a time to "let some of the dust settle." His appointment, which took ef- fect January 1 will run to about Ju- ly 1 this year when the ministerial duties here will be taken over by Rev. Bob Lepage, who is presently at the United Church in Port Dover. The former minister here, Rev. Glenn Jackson is now working at St. Paul's United Church in Ajax. Rev. Brown said last week that so far he likes the communities of Port Perry and Prince Albert very much, and he has always enjoyed living in -small towns. Prior to working in Huntsville, he spent several years in Sarnia (which he described as a small town that just grew into a ci- ty) and was in Cold Lake Alberta for three years. A native of Ottawa, he spent a couple of years 1967-69 teaching English, geography and religion at a large high school in the Central African country of Zambia.
