f | | The Lord called him north New minister in Caesarea 4 Reverend Rudy Heezen had no choice about his move to Caesarea Coinmunity Church. . Who, after all, can refuse a call- ing from God? That's what the 38 year old pastor believes happened when he heard about an opening at Caesarea's small, and only, village church. At the time, he was ministéring to a much larger church, with a con- gregation of about 750 people, at Zion Christian Reformed Church in Oshawa. He'd been there for the last cou- ple of years when he heard about Caesarea, and a chance to move to a large Toronto church, at the same time. The Toronto church boasted a congregation of more than 800, but Rev. Heezen said "I didn't feel it was right." - But on the other hand, he didn't even know where Caesarea was, hadn't heard of it before. When he saw the tiny church, which might fit 120 people, he was slightly underwhelmed. Still, he felt something drawing him to Caesarea, everything that happen- ed seemed to point that way, and he decided it was a call from God. "I really believe it's what the Lord wants me to do,'"' he says simply. Reverend Dr. W.H. Crawford has . been the church's minister for many years, and he had been actively searching for a replacement so he could retire. It looks like he found an en- thusiastic newcomer in Rev. Heezen, who insists on being known as "Rudy." A self-confessed evangelist, Rev. ® Heezen (who precently li res <1 Whit- by with his wife Anneke, and children Rudy, 14, and Jordana, 7), hasn't always been a minister. In fact, he's only been a minister for a little more than two years, after five years of studying through correspondence. Before that, he was a manager for Bell Canada, where he had 11 years experience and was making better than good money. : Problem was, he also had a drink- ing problem, and although he went to church on a regular basis, he - wasn't exactly excited about it. "I was one of those people who fell asleep," he says with a chuckle. And then, on a January 27, he visited a small full-gospel church in Whitby, where he was warmly received, and where he discovered Christ. "My life was good, my marriage was happy, and I was successful in business," he says. "Yet, my life had an emptiness inside. '""The pastor (at this church) ask- ed if there was anybody who wanted to accept the Lord. Instantly my life was changed. I came home, and threw the booze away. Smoking, "(he shrugs), "I'm an evangelist." Denture Therapy Clinie cursing, was gone. I was born again and my life just flip-flopped." " Not too much later, "I really sens- ed the Lord was calling me to the Ministry." So he studied, and studied some more, until one day he quit hic job with Bell and became a full-time minister, a decision he has never regretted. "The Lord has blessed us," he says. "It's been really fun. I really enjoy it. We're not suffering (finan- cially), we're doing well." His Dutch accented voice may be familiar to some people, because for two years he broadcasted spiritual messages over CHOO radio. And none of his messages is boring. Maybe because he used to fall asleep in the pews, he injects life in- to his teachings. "I can honestly say that I preach from my heart. It's real to me," he explains. 'The message is simple. I guess I'm a fiery preacher, but" Tonight (Tuesday at 7:30) a special installation service will be held at Caesarea Community Church, welcoming Rev. Heezen to the community. 7 1330 Ritson Rd.
