Po*T PERRY The Backyard Mechanics GTO Club wins top award Dave Milton of Scugog Island couldn't be any happier. At Speedorama '88, a car show held January 22, 23, 24 in the Automotive Building at Exhibition Place, Toronto, Dave's car picked up top honours. And not only did the Classic GTO Club of Ontario win first prize for the best display at the show, Dave and his wife Karen won first in their category, 'restored convertibles.' The Miltons own and adore a 1969 rag-top Pontiac GTO, with 400 horsepower under the hood, a glit- tering gold paint job, and the un- mistakable license plate, "1ST GTO." * Dave's been a member of the GTO club for three years and has spent a great deal of time at meetings, social occasions, summer picnics, and car shows. He's also a member of the executive, with the title Events Co-ordinator. In fact, it was all Dave's idea for the Speedorama display with the theme of "The Backyord Mechanics." Five spotless GTO's were the cen- trepiece, surrounded by parts, tools, two stuffed overalls acting as mechanics, and a hoist in the air. The display also featured three television sets broadcasting pre- recorded videos of past club activities. Although Dave doesn't want to "blow his own horn, he must have done a pretty fair job on the display, in order to win first prize at the _ prestigious show, in which hundreds of cars were entered, from all over Ontario and the United States. The prize was $1,000 cash and a trophy that's half as tall as Dave is ---- and he stretches well over the six foot mark. (Above the Post Office) PORT PERRY 985-9803 OPEN: Weekdays 10 AM to 4 PM For winning his own category, Dave and Karen received a plaque. "This is the first time we've won big,' Dave says. The seventy-five or so members in the club can, if they wish, make it to a car show just about every weekend of the summer. There's even an annual GTO convention in the U.S. every July. Dave made it down last year and was impressed with the quality of the cars. "That's the cream of the crop down there," he admits. And while Speedorama was the club's first big win, it has won before, at the Pickering Car Show last year (which the GTO club spon- sored), and the Cobourg Car Show. The Pontiac GTO was first pro- duced in 1964, and was renowned for being the 'muscle car' everyone wanted to own. Dave's own GTO can do the quarter mile in 15 seconds flat. GTO's continued to be made un- til 1974, but their biggest populari- ty, Dave says, ended in 1967. GTO owners interested in joining the Classic GTO Club of Ontario can call Dave at 985-9433.
