Well, four years later the tonic is still working and Armour is still going strong with his delightful and detailed creations in wood. Now just a few weeks shy of his 80th birthday, Armour says his health is pretty good and he's quite content to while away the long winter days and evenings in the workshop in the basement of his home near Greenbank. His specialty is hand-carved teams of working horses or oxen, complete with wagon or plow or log-filled sled. He fashions the animals and human figures from pine and bass-wood and hand-cuts strips of leather to make perfect replicas of harnesses and reins. Armour's eye for detail is amazing, the animal figures so life-like.in appearance, they look like they could start to move on command. He took up wood carving as a hobby about ten years ago on the suggestion of his wife Rachel. "I was looking for something to pass the time," he said last week. He started carving small rock- ing chairs, then tried his hand at farm animals, windmills and bird-houses (which are in great demand) and was soon working on the more detailed horse or ox- en teams. Over the past few years his work has generated a lot of atten- tion when he has put up displays at museums in the area, including the Scugog Shores Museum en Scugog Island. - While Armour is a little hesitant The tonic is still working about discussing the interest others have in his work and polite- ly declines to mention how much people are willing to pay for crea- tions in wood, one local collector of folk art has purchased several items and assured Armour that one horse and wagon team even- tually will make its way to the On- tario Museum of Folk Art. "It's just a hobby for me. It developed by my doing it. I work at it because I enjoy it," he said with a shrug. A life-long resident of the Greenbank area, Armour farmed for many years and then worked for a farm implement dealership. He said he never had any par- ticular skills as a carpenter or wood worker as a young man.
