SEWER Sy RETIN WN. & by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks open- ed their best of seven playoffs with a victory over the Uxbridge Bruins Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. After spotting the visitors an early 2-0 lead in the first period, the MoJacks settled into a workmanlike brand of hockey to nibble away at the Bruins and eventually emerge with a 6-4 win. As playoff games go, this was a somewhat subdued affair as both teams stayed away from heavy hitting, and referee Frank Robinson had an easy night call- ing just ten minors to Uxbridge and 11 to Port Perry. The Bruins jumped into a 1-0 lead at 2:20 of the first when Kevin Smith snapped a quick shot from the face-off circle as the Mo- Jacks Steve Fountain was serving a hooking penalty. Three minutes later, they took "- a 2-0 lead as captain Todd ~ . Laroche fought off a check on a partial breakaway to beat Paul Goreski with a shot along the ice. The MoJacks "were putting pressure on Bruin netminder Ian Witucki at 8:33 when Rob Baker scored on a rebound with John Harman and Chris Edmondson drawing the assists. The second period was just 21 seconds old when the MoJacks tied the score at deuces. Craig Menzies fired a quick shot from the slot with Baker and Darren Nesbitt getting the assists on this one. The MoJacks continued. to enjoy a fairly wide margin in the play through the middle period, but they were having trouble working into the clear for quality scoring chances. At 17:35, captain Darren Nesbitt put his team into the lead All teams in Port Perry Star } 4 PO i : y fo N MoJacks win first i for the first time when he snapped a quick wrist shot from a very sharp angle that seemed to glance into the cage off Witucki's pads. He was set up on the play by Rob St. Jules and Kevin Long. The Bruins managed to tie the game at 3-3 at 8:02 of the final period when Todd Laroche un- loaded with a long slap shot that appeared to dip under Goreski's glove hand. The MoJacks net- minder made up for that one a couple of minutes later when he was forced to make a difficult sliding stop on a point blank shot. At 11:07, the MoJacks were back in front 4-3, thanks to a determined effort by Kevin Long who took passes from Menzies and John Hartford and bulled his way past a Bruin defender to flip a quick shot by the surprised goalie. Rob St. Jules gave the MoJacks a 5-3 lead at 14:09 when he slamm- ed home a rebound from 15 feet out with Hartford and Len Giacalone drawing the assists. But the Bruins were not dead in the water in this one and Kevin Smith, with his second of the game, made the score 5-4 at the 15-minute mark. The insurance marker for the MoJacks came less -than ten seconds later when John Harman finished off a very pretty three- way passing play by tapping the puck into a wide open Bruin net. He was set up by Menzies and Baker. - Harman deserved that goal for he turned in a fine game for the MoJacks with some good puck- handling and strong fore- checking in the Bruin zone. The MoJacks enjoyed a fairly wide territorial edge in the play and fired 39 shots at Ian Witucki. For the Port Perry Mo- Jacks, captain Darren Nesbitt, led the team in scoring with 18 goals and 40 assists, Brian At the other end of the ice Paul Goreski faced 32 shots and he had to be very sharp on several of them, especially when the Mo- Jacks were killing a penalty. This was the second time in three nights these two teams fac- ed each other. Last Friday in Ux- bridge, in a game which meant - Uxbridge netminder lan Witucki could only look behind him on this play after the MoJacks Craig Menzies (9) beat him cleanly early in the - second period of the Junior C opening playoff nothing to either club, the Mo- Jacks coasted to a 5-3 win in the final regular schedule encounter. Auctioneers come up empty at Campbeliford The Pearce Auctioneers travell- ed to Campbellford on Saturday for a tournament. Their first game had them mat- ched up with a team from Kingston Township. Kingston started out on a very strong note, - taking shots on our net-minders Brandon Hammond and Mike Morden and making them count. However, after the first seven minutes the scoring ended and Port was able to hold them off from any further scoring, due to strong defense playing by Jeff Clarke and Mike Heasman. The wingers Kent Johnston, Kevin Gray; Darryl Moase, Mat- thew McClelland, Todd Parry and Brad Shanley were extremely fleipiu) as they played their posi- tions with ease keeping Kingston from making any moves. This strong Kingston team came out ahead on this game but Port was all fired up for their next e. & port's second game of the day was against Frankford. This was an exciting e as there was plenty of action for Port as most of the game was played around Frankford's net. They definitely out-played this team. Centermen, Tim Fitzpatrick, Tommy Chambers and Daryl McEnaney were very strong assists as they continually ham- mered at the net. However, the only one to count was a nice play by Tim Fitz- patrick assisted by Darryl Moase = and Jason Logan. Defenseman Jeff Clarke was again very strong as well as Brad Morten and Jason Logan. This one goal tied it up in a game that saw no goals till mid- way through the second period. However, with 2 minutes of play left, Frankford took the lead, of which Port was unable to match.
