rR Bs ------------ TI a A special education at Cartwright High School (From page 16) the grade niners. As Mr. Musselman explains, "You don't see that little clique standing over there, or this clique standing here. "They work together as a team, no matter what." And although Cartwright doesn't have any technical courses, it does boast the same subjects as larger schools. Music might not be taught during school hours, but it is being learned after school. The same goes for art. The staff seems to go out of its way to make sure the students at Cartwright get the best possible education. "They (the teachers) have to be enthusiastic. You can't come in here, teach your lessons, and go home," the principal says. One might think, with all Cart- wright High has to boast about, potential students might be knocking down the doors for - admittance. That doesn't happen. In the Cartwright area (Blackstock, Caesarea, Nestleton, Cadmus and surrounding areas), students have a choice whether they want to go to Cartwright High or Port Scugog Bridge scores February 10, 1988 Afternoon 3 Table Howell, Avg. 25 1st: Kath Burley & Gwen Ren- nie 29; 2nd: Doris Phinney & Ken Halliday tied with Jeanne Dy- mond & Doris Beare 25. (Above the Post Office) PORT PERRY 985-9803 OPEN: Weekdays 10 AM to 4 PM Perry High School. The Durham Board of Education will supply bus transportation to either. The majority choose Port 'Perry. It's more than ten times bigger, with a whole slew of technical courses and options not available at Cartwright. Many parents automatically assume Port Perry is better, simply because it is bigger. In fact, there's been times over the years, when the future of Cartwright High School has been in question. For awhile, it seem- ed like its doors might close due to declining enrolment. The Grade Ten class, as a result, on- ly has eight students. But at the moment, there's no question about Cartwright's future. Last September, 21 students enrolled into the Grade Nine program at Cartwright. Mr. Musselman expects the same number, or more, next September. But he, and other Cartwright supporters, don't rest on their laurels. For everyone at the Lit- tle School with the Big Heart, public relations is a full-time job. As subdivisions and new families move into Blackstock and the sur- rounding area, Cartwright High School supporters make every ef- fort to spread positive words. Last Wednesday night, at an in- formation meeting, many parents were convinced to send their children to Cartwright. "I just sort of boasted about the school to them,'"' Mr. Musselman admits cheerfully. And as long as the boasting con- tinues, so will Cartwright High. "It's up to the people," Mr. Musselman says. 'If they want to come, we'll be here." PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 16, 1988 -- 17 Obviously, this guy didn't want his picture taken, but who can blame him?
