PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 1, 1988 -- 27 Port Belles give it a good shot in Mariposa February 26, 27 and 28 saw the Port Perry 1.G.A. Belles par- ticipate in the Mariposa Tourna- ment competing against Markham and Cambridge. In the first game Friday night the girls played. their old rivals Markham but came out on the short end of a 7-4 score. Port got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Vicki Reid from Jen Pelow. An unassisted goal by Michelle Ryan gave us a 2 goal lead. However, it wasn't long before Markham tied the game and went ahead 3-2 just before the end of the first period. Early in the second period Michelle Ryan scored 2 goals assisted by Denise Tompkins and Lisa Francis which gave us the lead again for a short while. Markham proved their deter- mination to win and soon took over the lead which they never relinquished. Our girls played well but were unable to hold off this team. On Saturday morning the I.G.A. Belles travelled to Little Britain to meet the team from Cambridge nd tied 4-4. Again Vicki Reid rom Colleen Yorke and Jen casel || Pelow opened the scoring of the y. At the end of the first period Port was behind by a score of 2-1. - Another nice goal Vicki. With four minutes left in the game Port was down by a score of 4-1. However, the girls' spirit never failed and the girls played hard, checked hard and came up with 3 unanswered goals -- the last one to tie the game being scored with only 13 seconds left in the game. Scoring in this period were Michelle Ryan with 2 goals; Sherry Harris 1 goal and 1 assist; Lisa Francis 2 assists and Dana Forder 1 assist. Don't keep us in suspense for so long next time girls -- it is sure hard on your fans and coaches. The defense of Kim Caudle, Val White, Dana Forder and Denise worked hard to keep us in this game and to keep Cambridge out of our end. You sure looked like a natural white stick Denise. You sure would have scored that goalie with your shot! Great game girls! What a nice finish to a good game. On Sunday, Feb. 28, the 1.G.A. Belles met Cambridge to decide who would meet Markham for the gold and silver medals. Cambridge got on the scoreboard early in the game but it wasn't long before Lisa Francis from Kim Caudle tied the game. Lisa, who normally plays defense, was given the white stick over the weekend and did a super job. Her hustle throughout the tournament was certainly a great asset to the team and helped to spur the rest of the girls on when we were down. This was Lisa's first goal of the season. The first period prov- ed to be a goal for goal period and ended up with a 3-3 tie. Our other scorers were Sherry Harris from Denise Tompkins and Michelle Ryan from Lisa Francis. With the change of ends Port seemed to have trouble and were soon down 8-3. However, the girls kept digging and were able to come within 1 goal of tying this team again. You sure kept everyone on the edge of their seats during the last couple of minutes. Scoring in this period were Michelle Ryan 2 goals, both from Denise Tompkins, Sherry Harris PARTS VALUE OF THE MONTH. LUBE VALUE SPECTACULAR CASE IH Lubricants are your choice for superior quality.
