The Malmont Farms Atom A's concluded a busy hockey weekend by qualifying for the A final in the Port Perry Tournament Saturday afternoon. Friday night Port hosted the LNHL Canadians and came away with a 2-2 tie. Dave Bourgeois gave Port an early lead, backhan- ding Mike Labanovich's goalmouth pass into the net. Then, after Oshawa had taken a 2-1 lead, Mike made another nice feed from behind the net to Neil Mueller. Neil made no mistake ourying the puck to give Port the ie. The Scugog Arena was the sc Saturday morning, Malmont's first game matched then against the Oshawa Black Hawks. Just before the first period ended the line of Joe Broadworth, Chad Kearns and Neil Mueller applied some heavy pressure around the Oshawa net with Chad finally scoring assisted by Joe and Neil. At the mid point of the game, Jeremy Geer popped in a re- bound, assisted by Kenton LeFort and Jay Tredway. This goal was also the result of excellent sus- tained pressure by that line. Oshawa scored a goal on a penalty shot halfway through the ene Satuiday for the annual Atom hockey tour- third to cut the lead, but late in the game Brent Harper stole a puck at the Oshawa blue line and made a fine individual effort to beat two men and stuff in an insurance goal and salt away a 3-1 victory. That win put Port up against Uxbridge in game 2. Uxbridge opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the first but Chad got that back less than two minutes later. He potted the goal on a rebound with Joe and Neil drawing assists. In the second, Kenton emerged from a scramble to fire a high shot in the net for a 2-1 lead. Then Joe went to work as he scored three straight goals for his first hat-trick, and the first of the season for Malmont Farms. His first was a perfect deflec- tion of Chad's shot from the boards. Scott Heasman got the other assist, moving the puck from the point in to Chad. Neil also had a big hand in the goal, making a perfect check to start the play. The second came from a nice pass from Mike after Brett Lawson had kept the play alive alertly at the line. Then Steve Gilbert made a save, Chad pick- ed up the rebound and carried it the length of the ice to feed Joe off the edge of the crease for goal number 3. Beside his assist, Steve played a strong game and made one outstanding save on Uxbridge star Aaron Morrison with Port shorthanded and the score 3-2. Overall, the team had a fairly strong four games and special mention to Clay Scott who played some excellent games and added a few big rushes, especially against the Canadians. Congratulations also to the Pineridge Atom B's who were outstanding in winning their sec- tion of the tournament with three exciting games, including a Championship win over Georgetown.
