Wait and see on farm legislation. Easter Seal cam Durham Region council re- fused last week to support "right to farm" legislation that is cur- rently in the committee stage at Queens Park. Several councillors said they would not endorse the bill until they have had a chance to see the wording. However, councillors said they support the principle of right to farm legislation. The Ontario government is in the process of preparing legisla- tion that would protect farmers from nuisance law-suits over dust, noise and odour which result from normal farming operations. The bill will be known as the Farm Practises Protection Act. A five member Board will be set up lo investigate complaints about farming practises. This Board will have the power to dismiss the complaint if it is found un- justified, or it may order a farmer lo correct a problem. In a statement late last year, Ontario Agriculture Minister Jack Riddell said the new bill will give farmers some protection from nui- sance law suits and court orders, but it will not replace the need for land use planning policies and de- cisions that protect agricultural ar- cas from competing and incom- patible land uses.
