A consultant's report naming several potential sites within Dur- ham Region for a new Metro dump will be presented to the Re- gion's Works Committee this week. Regional chairman Gary Her- rema told the Star last Friday that Scugog is not on the list for po- tential sites, though he declined to name those locations within the Durham boundaries. Mr. Herrema did say that even though sites within Durham are named as possible locations for a new dump, it's not likely that one will be the final choice of the consultants working for Metro (Turn to page 3) Police chase ends with no injuries A 28-year old Sutton man fac- es numerous charges following an incident in Uxbridge late Saturday cvening. Regional Police constables B. Cooper and D. Kulas were called to a home on Baskin Street in Uxbridge to investigate the theft of car wheels and tires. They noticed a red Chev Nova leaving the arca. The vehicle was without rear licence, and the two officers attempted to get the driv- fer to pull over. They pursued the car to Main Street in Uxbridge at speeds up to 70 KM per hour. When they pulled the cruiser alongside the moving car, the driver veered against the side of the police cruiser causing a small amount of damage. The driver then lost control and ended up on the front lawn of a home on Main Street. He at- tempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by the two officers. Michael Nichols of Sutton was held in custody until Monday when he was to appear for a bail hearing. He is facing charges of theft under $1,000, possession of a prohibited weapon (a knife) im- paired driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. The two police officers were not injurcd in this incident. Island corner to get change An intersection on Scugog Is- land which has been the scene of several accidents and numerous near misses will likely be re- aligned by Durham Region next year. The intersection in question is at Scugog Centre where Regional Road 7 meets the 10th Conces- sion Line., which is heavily trav- elled year round by permanent res- idents and in summer by tourists hauling boats and trailers to Gore- ski's Marina and Campground. Homes built near the intersec- tion obscure the sight lines for drivers trying to get onto the Re- gional Road from the 10th, plus the fact there is a fairly sharp curve in the Regional Road just north of the intersection. After examining scveral alter- natives to improve the intersec- tion, the Durham Region Works committee has come up with the following recommendation. The Region plans to re-align the Concession Road both cast and west of the Island to make two T-type stops. Coming from the west, the Concession Road will veer south and form a straight T intersection with the Regional Road. Coming from the east, the Concession Road will veer north and form a similar T intersection. The total cost of the re- alignment is cstimatcd at about $110,000, and thc Works Com- mittee has recommended that con- struction be carried out in 1989. is Issue of Copy 50° 40 Pages Slam Dunk for R.H.
