26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 5, 1988 The Port Perry MoJacks did what they had to do Easter Sunday night against the Wellington Dukes: win the hockey game. Trailing the Dukes two games to none in the best of seven final for the Central Junior C crown, the MoJacks came home with a 5- 4 win and a chance to knot the series at two each when the teams hit the ice at the Scugog Arena this Wed. night (April 6) with face off at 8:30 PM. The Dukes won the series opener 7-3 in Wellington March 29, then nipped the MoJacks 4-3 two nights later in Port Perry, and The Port Perry MoJacks and (and toe to toe) battle for the Central berth In the all-Ontario semi finals. Aft skating Dukes, the MoJacks had to dig performance on Sunday night in Well The MoJacks now have a chance to s the Dukes on Wed. night at the Scugo a victory Easter Sunday would have given them a 3-0 hammer lock on the series. But the MoJacks showed a lot of grit in this game as at one point they trailed the Dukes 3-1. But a three-goal rally late in the second and a quick goal in the third gave them a 5-3 lead and they played it tough to preserve the 5-4 win. The Dukes scored first at 6:38 of the second period when Jeff Nimmo beat Brian Tarleton on a power play. A minute later, Greg Warriner jammed a loose puck- into the Duke net off a scramble, but the Dukes soon had a 3-1 lead. Dave Burnett cut the margin to one at 13:59 when he snapped in a rebound after Jeff McColl had rushed the puck deep into the Duke zone. Less than a minute later, Dave Culbert steered a puck across the line after after a shot from the point eluded Duke goalie Allan Bigg. And at 15:11, the MoJacks fi- nally took a lead when Len Giaca- lone worked hard at the side of the net to free the puck and slap it home. the Wellington Dukes are in a head to head Ontario Jr. C League crown and a er losing the first two to the hard- way down and come up with a gutsy ngton for a hard-fought 5-4 victory. quare the series at two as dg Arena. Game time is 8:30 they host - PeeWee series tied The PeeWee Legionnaires played their first two games last - weekend in their All-Ontario fi- nals and both teams are even at one game a piece. On Friday the team travelled to Hespeler to play their first match and lost 6-2. The Hespeler team has a lot of big boys and after the first two periods our team seemed to let up and started taking too many unnecessary penalties. Our only two goals were scored in the first period. Jason Cochrane scored our first goal on a hard shot from in front of Hespeler's net, after picking up a pass from Darryl Vanderslagt. Chris MacLeod scored our final goal on the open side of the net, with the pass coming from Jeff Parry and Steve Laird. On Saturday the fans were de- lighted to a hard hitting, fast mov- ing game here in Port. The team came out flying and Steve Laird was not long in finding the open side of Hespeler's net. Assisting on the goal was Jeff Parry and Ja- son Cochrane. With 35 seconds left in the first period Jeff Parry scored for the legionnaires on a nice backhand shot. The opportu- nity to score was set up by a great passing play from Jason Cochrane and Steve Laird. In the second period, while Port was on a power play, Jeff An- drews and Gavin Cochrane worked hard on defense to move the puck up to Steve Laird who again caught the goalie flat on a back- hand shot. Port scored again on a hard corner shot by jason Co- chrane that seemed to ring off the goal post, but the referree was right to count it as a goal. Assist- ing on the goal was Simon Trayn- - or. Hespeler was able to put one past our goaltender Rick Hutchin- son, but were frustrated through- out the game as time and time again Rick made outstanding saves to keep them from chalking the score higher. In the final period Jason McBride was able to find the open side of the net after Steve Laird came from behind the net to pass it out to Jason. Gavin Cochrane also assisted on that goal. Jason Cochrane scored the final gaol to make the game 6-1 for Port. As- sisting on the goal was Steve Laird and Jeff Parry. : The team all played great, Du- anc Empringham and Dave Pash- ley were playing hard and fast hockey, with wingers, Jason MeBeite, Brad Moase and nathan Brown having to dig hard on the boards and match their physical strenth with Hespeler's to" keep that team under check. This scries will be an exciting one, so if you have some time to come out to watch a fine dispaly of hockey come to our next game, here in Port Perry at 12:30 Sun- day (game time may be changed). Early in the third, Dean Sme- thurst gave the MoJacks a bit of breathing space when he converted -a nice goal-mouth pass from War- riner on a two on one break. The Dukes made it 5-4 at 7:13 on agoal from Mike Cle- ment in the deep slot. But that was all the scoring. Brian Tarleton made three fine stops late in the period to preserve the narrow lead. This was a hard hitting game that turned chippy at times with the MoJacks taking ten minors and the Dukes 12. GAME TWO This was a game the MoJacks should have won as they carried much of the play and out-shot the Dukes 46-21 in front of a huge crowd at the Scugog Arena. They rattled several shots off goal posts and cross bars and Duke goalie Dave Bunnett turned in a strong game to help his team to the 4-3 victory. MolJack goals, one in each period, came from Kevin Long, Dean Smethurst and Rob Baker. For the Dukes, Mike Maracle hit the winner at 14:41 of the third when he walked in alone on Brian Tarleton and flipped a back-hand high into the net. Typical of the kind of luck the MoJacks enjoyed was a play by winger Steve Ashby in the third period. He broke in alone on the left side and drilled a perfect shot to the short side that beat Bunnett cleanly. But the puck hit the post square on and was smoth- ered in the crease by the Duke goalie. In game one at the Welling- ton Arena March 29, the Dukes caught the MoJacks flat-footed and cruised to a 7-3 victory. The Dukes tallied on their first shot on net at the 23 second mark, and took a 2-0 lead on the power play six minutes later. The MoJacks appeared slug- gish and less than sharp, probably duc to the nine day layoff since their victory over Lakefield. The Dukes, on the other hand, fresh from their big win two nights carlicr over Bowmanville, seemed to carry the momentum into this game and they played with a lot of confidence. After falling behind 2-0 early MolJacks rebound after two defeats in the first, the MoJacks did come to life briefly to tie the score when Rob Baker slid home a back-hand at 13:13, and a minute later, Kevin Long broke out on a breakaway to tie the game with a nifty short-handed marker. But the Dukes took full ad- vantage of a string of MoJack penalties late in the period and went up 3-2 on a two man advan- tage. Things went from bad to worse in the middle frame for the MoJacks as the Dukes scored two more to push their lead to 5-2. And for the first time'in many games, the MoJacks faltered in the final period as the Dukes scored twice and the MolJacks could manage just one goal off the stick of Rob Baker at 6:35. The Dukes were full marks for this victory as they kept the struggling MoJacks off balance all game and made the most of their scoring chances. . Paul Goreski played in net for Port Perry, and could not be fault- ed for any of the Wellington goals. The. MoJacks took six minors in the first period, and the Dukes cashed in with three power play goals. Defenseman Steve Fountain took three of them, along with a ten minute misconduct. Late in the game, Fountain was assessed a match penalty for spearing, and that carries a suspension that will keep him on the shelf for the rest of this series, if not longer. The MoJacks clearly showed the effects of the long layoff be- tween games. Their usually po-' tent power play sputtered and coughed, and they yielded three power play goals. They hit at least two goal posts and on good scoring chances were firing the puck right at netminder Allan Bigg. For the Dukes, Jamie Bran- scombe led the scoring with a pair of markers. Game four is set for this Wed. night at the Scugog Arena at 8:30 PM, and game five will go Friday in Wellington, also at 8:30. If there is a game six, it will be Sunday in Port Perry at 7:30, and should the series go seven, it will be Jhpril 12 in Wellington at 8:30. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING ?
