Printers take the Novice title The Championship game in the N.H.L. division of Port Perry Minor . Hockey was played last Saturday: The Port Perry Prin- ting team came out flying, and by the end of the second period had built up a 3-0 lead. The Van Camp squad battled back with determination, but was able to put only one past Paul Shrigley in the Printers' net in the final period. He was helped out immensely by the defensive play of his mates, who shut down Van Camp's offence almost complete- ly. Final score was 4-1. Matt Phillips scored the goal for Van Camp, on a nice set-up by Matt Baxter. The big gun for Port Perry Printing was Jason Hopkins. He had an exceptional game, scoring the opening goal, and assisting on all 3 others that his team scored. Aaron Levy, Chris Jamieson, and Derek Leeming had those goals. Derek also had an assist, as did Troy Campbell. All the players on both sides pu out a big effort, and deserve congratulations. In a poorly played home opener which Port won 8-7, many players were ill from the flu and it showed with lack-lustre skating, non existant back checking and shakey goaltending. The Eagles jumped out quickly to a 2-0 lead on goals from Brad Menzies and Clair Cornish. Beamsville scored twice with a re- ply from Mike Sorley to make it 3-2 for Port after one period of play. In a span of two minutes early in the second period, Port scored 3 times to take a 6-2 lead on goals by Comish, Warren Geer and John Lally. Not to be outdone, Beams- ville came back with 3 quick goals themselves to narrow the gap 6-5. Port replied with two more goals from the sticks of Kris Cavereau and Cornish with his third of the game. In the third period, Beamsville scored twice to tighten the score to 8-7 which Port protected to the end. On Saturday, the Eagles visited Beamsville and came home win- ners by virtue of a 7-4 victory played in a small rink suited to the hosts style of play. Again Port scored early and of- ten taking a 2-0 lead after four minutes on goals by Brad Menzies and Warren Geer. Before the period was over, Port increased their lead to 4-0 as Kevin Gibson scored twice. With one minute to go, both teams enchanged goals with Clair Cornish counting Port's marker to end the first period with the Eagles ahead 5-1. In the second period, Cornish and Todd Taylor sandwiched goals around the lone Beamsville goal making it 7-2 after two periods. In a penalty filled contest, Beamsville managed to score two more in the third period to make the score 7-4. Brad Bricknell re- turned to form in this game and was outstanding between the pipes. At home on Sunday, the Eagles again jumped out in front of Beamsville quicly with a 2-0 lead after three minutes of play on goals by John Lally and Brad Menzies. In the last few minutes of the period, both teams scored twice, with Port's goals scored by Todd Taylor and Steve Connors to take a 4-2 lead. The score stayed the same throughout the second period as a steady stream of penalties to both teams kept the scoring chances to a minimum, Midway through the third peri- od, Beamsville narrowed the score to 4-3 and were applying strong pressure in order to equalize things, when Steve Connor's wer play goal made the score 5- . Beamsville kept up the pressure and finally scored with 21 seconds left to make the final score 5-4.
