And how beautiful it is. The patient grass blushing a tender green across the mounding cheeks of the hills; eager crocci blooming purple and the pussywillows, fat as their cream- fed namesakes, drop to the ground where they tumble in the breezes like kittens at play. Each spring is an unfoldment of wonder that makes one glad to be alive. Because -- its Oscar time. By the time you read this, the awards will be over, but now it is still up for grabs and I want to go on record as nominating Sean Connery as best supporting actor. Ever since I saw him years ago as 007 in Goldfinger I have had a one- sided love affair going on with this man. Sure, he's gotten older, balder and slightly paunchy, but who hasn't? Maybe it's his eyes, or his accent, but whatever -- he still turns my crank. No, I haven't seen The Un- touchables, the movie he is nominated for, but I have seen snatches of it on T.V. and I like him in this role. Hope he gets the Oscar, he's paid his dues. To be truthful, I haven't seen any of the movies nominated this, or any other year for the past five years or so. As time goes by. you'll know why. part of my life. By the time night falls I'm ready to settle down to a good murder mystery, not go tripping out on the town. Guess that's a sure sign of advanced age, but it keeps me happy and out of trou- ble. Agatha Christie, P.D. James, Martha Grimes, Josephine Tey and Ruth Rendell are a few of my favourites and they have provid- ed me with many an entertaining evening tucked in bed, with a pot of tea and some munchies close at hand. The art of murder, British style, is still a classic read in my books. Gladys Dalby has informed us that the U.C.W. is busy preparing for the Annual Spring Bazaar to be held May 4th at 1:30. There will be a luncheon preceeding the bazaar at 12:30 by ticket only, so get yours by calling Beryl Scott, 725-4548 or Evelyn Holliday, 655-4666 and have a great lunch as only these ladies can do it. Tickets are only $4.00 and worth every penny. Come on out for a day of great bargains and even better food at the Columbus United Church on Wednesday, May 4. Don't forget the night of cards on April 23 at 8 p.m. Walter Beath still has some tickets. This is the only game in town, so don't miss it. Enjoy the weather and do take time to watch this spring emerge in all her fragile splendor. And, keep in touch, and we'll see you in the paper. : Scugog Island (From page 16) ly the nights were a little longer than pleased some of the passengers, as replacement of engines seemed to be unhurried. After leaving the train, the Martyns spent some time in Chihuahua and then back to El Paso in Texas. While in Mexico, Martyns notic- ed much poverty and especially among the children, many who seem to live by being little scavengers with little respect for property. But, you can get a hair- cut there for 33 cents. This interesting trip took two months. Our faithful mail carriers don't get a chance for a prolonged winter vacation so we are glad to see them have 4 days off for Easter. Accordingly Joe & Clara Dowson with son Jim and his wife Janet and child Jonathan spent the Easter weekend in Cleveland, Ohio visiting Mr. and Mrs. Paul Day and family. One Sunday before that Joe and Clara visited Joe's cousin Mrs. Ruth Purdy at Orangeville.
