Every year a conference is held by a Block Parent community in Ontario. The purpose of the con- ference is to provide workshops, seminars and teaching materials to Block Parent volunteers and police officers, who can then in- ject their new ideas into their local programs. This year's con- ference, to be held at the Holiday Inn in Oshawa, has the theme - 'Children - A Present for our Future.' Country Chords banquet The Country Chords Ladies Barbershop Chorus held their In- stallation Banquet on April 5th. Marlene Sargent did an incredible job as Installation Officer. The new executive are: Presi- dent - Betty Foote; Vice- President - Janet Stephens; Treasurer - Betty Wilson; Recor- ding Secretary - Mary Jewell; Corresponding Secretary - Michiline Cox. Following a delicious meal and ceremonies, the ladies enjoyed a very humorous skit performed by two chorus members, Betty Lowe and Ann Lowery. As well, Mr. Don Sullivan from the organization 'Victims of Crime' will discuss how to prevent children from becoming victims. P.C. John Logan of the Durham Regional Police Force will lecture on drug-related issues, and delegates will learn of the many books and movies available for teaching children how to stay safe. Opening ceremonies on the first night of the conference (May 4) will include short speeches by several speakers (tentatively, the of Directors, and a representative of the Durham Regional Police). These will be followed by a pup- pet play about the Block Parent program (performed by local school children) and a wine and cheese party. On the second night of the con- ference, there will be a banquet at which the guest speaker will be Mr. Norman Panzica, Senior Con- sultant to the Council on Drug Abuse. Following the banquet, there will be a performance by the Jazz Disciples from O'Neill Collegiate. Then Mike Mandell, the well-known mentalist, will entertain the delegates. cRIME | "STOPPERS Crime Stoppers and the Durham Regional Police are ask- ing for the Public's help in solving a Break and Enter and Violent Assault which occurred in Oshawa on March 23rd. At about 1:05 a.m. a woman came home from work and entered her house on Jasper Avenue. As she did so she noticed a man hiding behind the door. The victim started to scream and the suspect told her to shut up or he would kill her. He grabbed her and managed to drag her onto the floor. She continued screaming and the suspect jammed a piece of cloth in her mouth. She managed to get the cloth out of her mouth and got back on her feet. She was grabbed again, this time by the shoulders of her coat. Another violent struggle ensued where she managed to get away, by him pulling her coat and sweater over" her head. She ran out of the house and called the Police. She was very fortunate and suffered only cuts and bruises. Entry was gained by removing a basement window. The suspect is described as a white male, about 6'2"' -- 64" in his 30's, wearing dark clothing and a stocking mask over his head. He was carrying a dark bag. A re-enactment of this Crime will be shown on CITY TV, Channel 57 Cable 7, on Thursday, April 21st during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. news. It will also be shown on CHEX and CKVR TV stations on Friday, April 22nd, again during their news. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1000 for information leading to an arrest in this or any other Crime.
