10A -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 26, 1988 Some very famous characters have stepped from the pages of classical literature and will be on display at the Scugog Library un- til May 13. The figures, some 37 in all, are crafted from papier-mache, and they are the creations of husband and wife artists Jan and Jean Baj- er. The figures are delightfully life-like, hand-painted and posed in such a way as to capture the es- sence of the characters they de- pict. Two that will surely catch your eye are Katisha and Pooh- bah, from Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado." Also on display are figures from Don Quixote and Shakes- peare. | The exhibition is called Clas- sics in Papier-mache, and all the Famous people handcrafted in paper-mache ANALDA GARDEN CENTRE EVERGREENS -- TREES -- SHRUBS -- PEAT MOSS -- GARDEN CHEMICALS -- FERTILIZERS -- FERTILIZER SPECIAL i 1 5% OFF WITH THIS COUPON -y C.l.L. The Bajers work out of a stu- dio at their rural home in a con- verted school house at Brunner, Ont., near Stratford. Jean has been working in pa- pier-mache for more than 30 years, while Jan learned this unu- sual art-form in 1970. He's a na- tive of Czeckoslovakia, a graduate in visual arts from Charles Uni- versity in Prague, and the School of Fine Porcelain in Karlsbad. Jean was born in Hamilton and is a graduate .in design from the Ontario College of Art. While they say that porcelain and stoneware is "their bread and butter," they love working with the papier mache creations, and Jan's next project will be Peter Pan in flight. Their creations have becn snapped up by collectors in this country, the United states, Europe and the Middle East. The show will remain at the Scugog Library on Water Street until May 13.
