f PN TEI Tips on renting pasture Each year, we receive a number of inquiries about the cost "of renting pasture. There is no definite answer to the question, of course. Each ren- tal deal is arrived at by a process of negotiation. The final price ultimately depends on the availability of pasture, the de- mand for it in the area, and the ability of the pasture to produce results. A recent publication, '"'Cash Rental Rates in Ontario 1987," puts the average price in Central Ontario at eleven dollars per acre in a range of five to twenty-five dollars. This study does not try to break out whether the pasture was rented for dairy heifers, beef stockers, or cows and calves. A more accurate measure of the valle of pasture land is the amount of growth it can produce. This method puts some onus on both the owner and the renter to apply good management. The owner of the livestock gets more value for his money if the pasture produces 300 lbs. of beef per acre than he would at 200 lbs. per acre. If he pays twenty-five cents per pound of live gain, he would pay an extra twenty-five dollars per acre for the land. On the other hand, if the owner does not fertilize the land, or provides land that produces only 10 lbs. of gain per acre, he would only receive two dollars and fifty cents per acre for the land. -+ This system, with some varia- tions, is used on the community pastures throughout Ontario. It provides returns to ownership of the land according to the manage- ment effort and agricultural pro- ductivity of the land. Using this idea as a guideline, a cattle owner and a land owner can work out their own deal ac- cording to which person provides the fencing, the salt and mineral, any supplementary feeds such as hay or creep feed, watering ar- rangement, and so on. om ---------------- at ..
