"It's a very active budget, cer- tainly not a standstill budget," was the way Regional councillor 12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 3, 1988 Township dips into reserves for 88 budget Lawrence Malcolm summed it up. Even though the Township will take nearly $700,000 from reserve accounts this year, treasur- er Kathleen Harper said the reserve New school (From page 1) their suggestions. "We (the committee) would like to have a name selected by this coming summer," she said. Mrs. Kelly said the Board has no specific guidelines on naming schools, but she suggested the name should be a reflection of the x local area and possibly have some traditional or historical signifi- cance. Residents of Scugog can sub- mit their suggestions to Mrs. Kelly, or they can drop them off at the Port Perry Star office (in an envelope, please) and we will for- ward them to her. finances remain at a healthy level. Scugog retains just over $1.1 million in various reserve ac- counts at this time, and they will grow considerably by the end of the year if development in the Township comes anywhere near the levels of 1987. Last year, for example, the Township tucked away $291,000 in lot levies and a further $113,000 in park levies. "One area of the budget that shows a considerable increase over last year is in sidewalk construc- tion. The Township will spend $115,000, compared with just $22,000 in 1987. Salaries and benefits for general administration are up about $60,000, reflecting additional staff that have been hired. And members of council also received a bit of an increase in their salaries. The Mayor will be paid $12,500, an increase of $1500; while councillors will be getting $9500, or $1,000 more than last year. These rates of pay for councillors are similar to what is paid in other Townships the same size as Scugog. The Port Perry Unit of the Scugog Fire department will re- ceive $123,000 for capital items, including $60,000 as the second payment on a new emergency res- cue vehicle. Other items in the de- partment budget include $7500 for a rescue boat, motor and trailer, and $20,000 for equipment to re- fill air bottles. The Caesarea fire unit will re- ceive $43,000 for capital items, the largest being $35,000 towards the future purchase of a new tank- er truck. The Scugog Library submit- ted a request for $120,000 in oper- ating money this year, and it was granted by the council. Garbage collection and dispo- sal will cost just over $500,000, up considerably from $389,000 last year. That figure could climb even higher if Durham Region is not granted a large tipping fee re- bate by the Metro Toronto coun- cil of $28 per tonne. Scugog ratepayers won't know for another few days what the total property tax increase will be this year. Although the Durham Board of Education budget will add about $70 more in taxes for the average homeowner, the Regional council has yet to approve its 1988 budget. But the average tax hike there is expected to be about $20 in Scugog. If that Regional budget is ap- proved it will mean about $100 more in property taxes for the av- erage assessed home in the Town- ship: $20 for local (Scugog) gov- ernment; $20 for Regional gov- ernment; and $70 for education purposes. Street proofing your children The Scugog Crisis Centre is pleased to be able to bring to you a streetproofing programme for your children.
