Above, the Friday night air was made sweeter by the sounds of the Senior Wind Ensemble, which just returned from a Boston competition with a Bronze rating. If you missed this talented band at Artfest, you can catch 8 at the bandshell, Palmer Park (June 9, raindate). Over 60,000 students from grades 9, 10 and 11 (and a few from grade 8), representing over 1700 schools, participated in the three junior divisions of the contest. Port Perry High School com- petes with schools from Zone 68 which includes all schools in Durham as well as schools as far east as Campbellford and as far north as Fenelon Falls. In each contest, the top 3 students from each school make up the school team (though many other students will have participated.) In the PASCAL contest (grade 9), Port Perry High School plac- ed 3rd out of 39 schools in the zone. Jenny Crawford, David Donneral and Tom Rowett formed our school team with Jenny scoring high enough to be placed on the Canadian honour roll (top 1 per- cent in Canada). Special mention should be given to participants from R.H. Cornish Public School who attempted this contest and auto glass & trim ied. Inthe CAYLEY contest (grade 10), Port Perry High School plac- ed 7th out of 37 schools in the zone. Our top students were Graham Sullivan, Sarah Cole, and James Parkin. In the FERMAT contest (grade 11), we placed 3rd out of 34 schools in our district. The school team included Todd Poppleton (Ontario honour roll), Zakeana Reid and Todd Taylor. Congratulations to all Port Perry participants for their fine showing in the Canadian Mathematics Competition. The second night of "Artsfest" at Port Perry High School was mostly musical (the night previous, April 28, featured music and a dramatic presentation, "Games"), along with a dazzling display of artwork. Part of the charm of the evening was the PPHS Girls' Ensemble. Also performing was the Senior Wind En- semble, Swingsation, Jazzmerize, and Jazz On Six. Ss <2.
