le T™ "Rael Teil bE A Coed a Seeing news in the raw Guides visit Star On January 24th, 1988, the 1st Port Perry Girl Guides invited Cathy Oliffe to speak to them. Cath's visit was in conjunction with the girls work to obtain their Reporter's badge. Michelle Moynham introduced Cathy as our guest speaker. Cathy was a real hit! She enlightened everyone on what censorship was and the difference between a news story and an editorial and described her job as a reporter. She told everyone when she is writing a news story she always keeps in mind the "five W's" in order to report all the details, those being, Who, What, Where, When and Why and she cited examples of each word. Cathy also described the jobs of the publisher and the editor of the Port Perry Star. Cathy then interviewed a guide, Megan Baxter, and we all learn- ed a great deal about Megan's ac- tive life, just from Cathy's ques- tions in her interview. Michelle Moynham, on behalf of all the girls present, thanked Cathy for coming out, especially when she has such a hectic schedule. Our meetings are always held on Mon- day evenings and Peter Hvidsten had very graciously let Cathy have some time away to talk to us. As everyone knows the Port Perry star has to be ready to go to press early Tuesday morning therefore every valuable minute is spent on the paper during Mon- day - all 24 hours! The next part we had to do was visit a newspaper plant, so what better place than the Port Perry star. Our visit was scheduled for the following Monday but due to an emergency situation at the Star offices, we were unable to at- tend. Instead we toured the of- fices on Monday evening, May 2nd. The Star's publisher, Peter Hvidsten, invited us in and we visited the area where John McClelland, editor, and Cathy Oliffe, News and Features Reporter, worked on the newspaper, which was to go to Bowmanville for the printing ear- ly the next morning. Peter show- ed the process of how the newspaper was entirely set up. The girls saw the front page of the paper "intheraw" and, of course, recognized everything on the front page the next day when the newpaper hit the stands. The girls remembered Cathy, of course, and she had all the girls come into the dark room and aac.
