a a 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 10, 1988 White Feather Farms open up a country store Once famous in this area for its eggs alone, White Feather Farm is now known for much, much more. Namely, the White Feather Country Store and all the highly delicious edibles inside. Open since March 17, the cozy little shop (right on the Oshawa Road at Raglan) boasts a wealth of staples and not-so-staples, and is well worth a leisurely browse. While fresh eggs, fruit and veg- etables are the mainstay of this bright, homey establishment, all sorts of other goodies are sold as well, including: homemade bak- ing (bread, tarts, rolls, pies), a whole dairy case containing a wide selection of Warkworth cheeses, Kawartha ice cream, pure maple syrup, cider, homemade po- toato chips, exotic salad dress- ings, "Jessie's Homemade" pre- serves--chili sauce, raspberry- pineapple, strawberry-apricot, blueberry rhubarb, beer mustard, and little trial size jars of fancy honeys (blueberry, sunflower, wildflower and clover). Not to menuon "Mom's Pickled Eggs"--actual White Feather eggs that were pickled by the "Mom" of this family operation. The Schillings family is well known in this neck of the woods, having lived on Scugog Island for awhile before moving to the Ra- glan farm, where all the Schill- ings and all the White Feather chickens have lived for 25 years. Liz Schillings is in charge of this new enterprise--her parents are now retired, but she does have much help from siblings Maria, Karen, and Hubert. Liz, you might want to know, is responsible for baking all those delicious homemade quiches you find at the Port Perry IGA. And she still is making quiche-- right at the store, along with many other baked items. But she's finding her time in short supply these days, with the store con- stantly growing with new prod- ucts and taking shape. As well as food items (Liz says all the staples are available at the store, everything from milk and bread to potatos and, ot course, eggs), the store displays many countrified gift items. Giant - stuffed sheep share shelves with pillow cats and tole painting, "while pot pourris scent the entire store from their position next to the cash register. On special occasions, like Mother's Day just past, the White Feather Country Store even fea- tures colourful and fragrant potted plants. Of course, as summertime ap- proachs, the store will be filled with the scent of local grown fruits and vegetables--Liz promis- es that "world-famous" Mann's corn on the cob will be in the store come harvest time. ° With all the store has to offer, it's no wonder Liz is able to say business is good. But despite everything else in the store, she considers the eggs the main reason for the store's success so far.
