At one time, the Port Perry Star wrote about the accompanying re- staurant as a cozy relic of a couple decades gone by--with formica _ countertops, non-matching plates, friendly staff, and real Heinz ketchup in small bottles. Visiting the restaurant was al- ways an experience, but like all good things the restaurant came (0 an end. Now the location is an entirely different type of experience. Purchased last summer in part by Barrie resident Bob Chapman (and in part by Pioneer), the re- staurant remained closed for some time while renovations took place. Open since May 7, the spot is now called the Donut Gallery, and boy has it undergone a facelift. Outside, everything is bricked is warm shades of red. The inside was completely gutted and is now bright, enlarged, tiled--perfect for the "after" picture in a Mr. Clean commercial. Even the entrance is changed, from the front screen door, to a more modem version at the side. Donut Gallery manager Rob McDonell, of Omemee, never did see the old Pioneer restaurant, but he's pretty happy with the new version. And he's also proud of the com- pany--not to mention the 30 va- rieties of doughnuts sold at the re- staurant. Along with coffec and all those doughnuts, the Donut Gallery sells sandwiches, soup, chili, muffins, and somcthing called "The Brekkie"---a buttered biscuit with ham or sausage and cheese and egg. All the baked items arc made fresh daily at another Donut Gal- lery location on Highway #115-- the first in what Rob McDonell says will be a large chain. The ridges location (on the Oshawa Rd) is the second Donut Gallery to open. Already plans are in the works for more shops in Lindsay, Lon- don, and Scarborough. For now the hours are Monday to Friday, 6 am. to 10 p.m,, Sat- urday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sun- day 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. oo New taste at the ridge i o DOUBLE CHOCOLATE EE ATE i i will Hid oY Things are tasting and smelling good at the Pioneer service station these days--since the opening of The Donut Gallery. The shop, humber two in what is being planned as an extensive chain, is managed by Rob McDonell (left) but it's Murray McGarrett, a baker, who makes the doughnuts so delicious.
