Ee Esme al toe Dn Gh IP 0 7 by John '"Wally" Nesbitt - When something goes wrong on a racetrack, it can go wrong suddenly and in a big way. This is when those people in the baggy white coveralls standing trackside become the most important folks at the circuit. Trained in basic First Aid and Fire Fighting techniques, they are members of The Canadian Race Com- munications Association. They are the Marshalls and the unsung heroes of racing. If you've ever wondered how a driver on a racetrack, travell- ing at speeds on the outer edge of control, is able to react so quickly to events occurring out of his view, you should know that the secret lies with the Marshalls. They are the driver's eyes and ears and through a system of flag and light signals, as well as hand signals, the corner workers are in constant communica- tion with the drivers and amongst themselves. When an emergency does occur, certain Marshalls forewarn approaching drivers of the incident by means of a flag signal. At the same time the Safety Marshalls respond to the scene prepared to fight a possible fire, to aid the driver should he (or she) be trapped or injured in their car, and to quickly clear the track in order for safe racing to resume. The third team, the Phone Marshalls, are responsible for informing the Race Of- ficials and the other corner workers around the track of the severity of the accident and they have the authority to call in other services such as ambulances, fire vehicles and tow trucks as required. : But Marshalling is not always this dramatic. The C.R.C.A. also has an active social calendar which includes corn roasts and barbeques, regular meetings with guest speakers (occa- sionally bearing gifts), bashes with some of the more popular sponsor's products and all of this topped off with a year end ban- quet with awards and prizes for all. If you want to get more involved in racing, or even just become a more informed observer, maybe you'd like to become a member of the C.R.C.A. If so, you can contact these people at this address. Canadian Race Communications Association The first event of the season at Mosport is this coming long weekend with the return of the Budweiser Victoria Day Sprints. Some of the best motorcycle racers in the country including West Hill's Art "The Dart' Robbins and Markham's Paul MacMillan will test Mosport's curves in the Castrol Super Bike Challenge. Backing the big bikes is a full schedule of amateur and profes- sional motorcycle races, with an appearance by some of Mosport's four-wheeled racers as well. Watch for the Honda Michelin Series, the new Becker's Canon Challenge for Formula 1600 cars and the Player's, General Motors Motorsport Series for Camaros and Firebirds. 'A final footnote for local racing fans. Michael Rivet, who piloted the Dennis Anderson sponsored Camaro to a second place overall finish in the 1986 Player's Challenge Series, has decided to hang up his helmet and pursue his business interests. Michael, who won the Honda Michelin Championship in 1985, may com- pete in the odd race to keep his competition licence and we're glad to see he is keeping his options open. Hopefully we will see him return to what was a promising career. Best wishes for the future, Mike. That's about it for this week. The next time you hear from us, we will have an update on the busy racing month of June and a full report on the Victoria Day Sprints and that really will be "From Corner Five."
