Brother-sister reunion after four decades Les Dunn and Norma Cook have spent the last couple of weeks catching up on the news of half a life-time. Les and Norma are brother and sister who had not seen each other for more than 40 years. But the separation ended May 8 when Les stepped off a jet at Toronto airport on his first ever visit to Canada from his native England, and the reunion with his sister Norma of Port Perry. And yes, both told the Star last' week that they recognized each other, even after so many years. Les was just a youth when Norma left England shortly after the war to come to Canada as a "war bride." She never returned to England, and after their parents died, Les and Norma say there was a period of years when they more or less lost track of each other, But members of their family thought it would be nice for Les to make a trip to Canada, and the plans became a reality early: this month, Les will be heading home May 27, but he says he certainly hopes to make another trip to this country. He's been having just a great time here. Along with catching up on news with Norma, he's been taking in the tourist sites of Ontario with trips to Toronto, the 1,000 Islands, Niagara Falls and a weekend at a cottage in the Hali- burton area. "I've really enjoyed myself. The people are so friendly. Why, some are even starting to call me Uncle Les," he told the Star last week. About the only major com- plaint he has about Canada is the beer (it's served much too cold for his liking) and the money system, which he finds a bit confusing. Les works for the British gov- ernment and lives in a small town just outside London. Like many visitors to Canada from th , he's amazed at the distances here. A day trip of some 300 miles (both ways) is nothing for Canadians, but Les says in England, such a trip would be a weekend outing. "We'd leave Friday night and get back home on Sunday," he said with a big smile. He also finds its a bit unusual that women seem to wear slacks everywhere: to work and even out to dinner. And though he didn't want to admit it, he found a fishing trip posed a bit of a problem. He fished for several hours without a hook on the line. He opened up the swivel and put the bait on that. "These darn Canadian fish hooks," he thought to himself, not wanting to ask if that's really how Canadians do their fishing. Several hours later, his nephew noticed the bait on the swivel, and they enjoyed a chuckle over it all. Les insists he's going to . make a return trip to Canada some day, even if the beer is too cold. DR. D.
