20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 25, 1988 Community Care: a decade of special care More than 130 people filled the Latcham Centre Thursday May 12, 1988 to celebrate the Tenth An- 'niversary of Scugog Community Care/Information Scugog. The afternoon began with dessert and coffee followed by the annual business meeting and special presentations. The rest of the - time was pleasantly spent listen- ing to the music of the children from the Scugog Christian School, Louise Hartney, Sweet Charity and Port Perry High School's Jazzmerize. The following is the Chairper- son's report which may be of in- terest to those who are not familiar with Community Cares services. by John den Boer That our beginnings were small can be understood from the fact that on February 1, 1978 we started with a part time staff per- son, Mrs. Elizabeth Fulford in the small office of the Old Arena (since demolished) on Water Street with 40 Volunteers. Ten of those people have remained ac- tive during our full ten years. Our services were limited to transportation, home help, minor home maintenance, grasscutting, yardwork, snow shovelling, telephone security checks and visiting. In August of the same year the Community Involvement and Volunteer Program (C.I.V.P.) was added. Trained volunteers assist adults who are having dif- ficulty coping with stress. The assistance is given in matters of home management, nutritional shopping and preparation of meals, employment preparation, T0 SUMMER & NEED TO -- OR -- LOOKING AHEAD LOSE WEIGHT? By 1984, our Home Sup- port services had grown to the point that responsibility for the C.LV.P. was transferred to a part time C.1.V.P. Co-ordinator to run the program in Scugog and Ux- bridge Townships. Mrs. Nel Mar- shall and now Mrs. Elaine Arsenault have given excellent leadership to this program. During our ten years of service in the Township of Scugog, the Advisory Committee has con- tinually asessed how we could be of further help to the community. However, all new initiatives must be provided by Volunteers with a low staffing component. Meals on Wheels, Footcare, Income Tax Preparation, Information Scugog and Luncheon Date have been added, thanks to the commitment of our Volunteers. Over the ten years our Volunteer numbers have more than tripled to 145 persons from all walks of life, assisting over 300 residents each year. Mrs. Fulford's position became full time in 1980. After leaving our humble beginnings in the Arena and spending six years in a room in the "yellow house' we are very - proud of finally moving into ap- propriate offices at 175 North St. on January 1, 1987. In 1984, Durham Regional Com- munity Care surveyed the pro- blems of those who have the care of an older or disabled person at home and began to look for ways to give them a break from their twenty four hour responsibility. This resulted in the setting up of the Caregiver Relief Program urn to page 21) ALL ....... 985-9833 MON. & THURS. . 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM TUES. & FRI. ...... 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM COUNSELLING 238 QUEEN STREET CEnTRY PORT PERRY 3 ne gy i i EF ii boi bs Community Care honoured volunteers who have been with the program for the full ten years at the Tenth Anniversary Meeting held at the Latcham Centre.
