PORT PERRY STAR -- (From page 20) which has been a benefit to many of our families. In 1985 our thoughts in Scugog turned to the Wheels to Meals idea. The first Luncheon Date was held in September 1985. A light lunch is provided by the women of Hope Christian Reformed Church, followed by a social hour. Attendance has grown to average thirty people each month. We welcome elderly people who live alone or with their families to join us. The Meals on Wheels service "has grown to include Blackstock, Nestleton, Caesarea and Scugog "Island in addition to Port Perry and Prince Albert. Plans are in the making to extend the service to Greenbank and Seagrave, hopefully in the Fall. The Com- munity Nursing Home and Port Perry Hospital continue to prepare nutritionally balanced meals for the meal service. In 1987/88 our _ Service Volunteers provided 150 weeks of work to support their neighbours in our community. The Office Volunteers provided 58 weeks of work to Community Care. They are the friendly recep- tionists who answer the phone, look after requests, provide infor- mation and referrals, keep Foot Care schedules, etc. We are pleased to be a training station for the Co-operative Education Program at Port Perry High School. Christina Stubbs has been our student this year. The last number of years we have aiso been able to hire a sum- mer student through a Federal Grant. The time may not be far off that a part time assistant may be needed in view of the increased numbers of people being served. In addition to our program ac- tivities we updated our Opera- tional Guidelines for the Advisory Committee this year to reflect our relationship and responsibilities as members of the Durham Region Community Care Association. Fluffy's ... - - . a Wednesday, May 25, 1988 -- 21 First decade Having the Staff support of Mrs. Fulford throughout our ten _years is very much appreciated. Annual Meetings throughout the years have been occasions to bring Volunteers and the people who use:-our services together. Some business has to be taken care of, but it is also a time of music and being together in a social atmosphere. We realize how many of us are doing volunteer work with the motiva- tion to help others. Quite often the benefit to the people we help is in knowing there are those in the community interested in them, rather than the actual service provided. As we look back over these ten years, what can we say? First of all, I think, we must not forget that before Community Care started, a lot of support and mutual help took place by in- dividuals and families. And, that continues to be done today and will continue in the future. However, our increasingly mobile society means that more and more people are cut off from family and friends and have no one to turn to for help. Somehow, there are people who have the time and willingness to help. Who can I help? That's where Community Care can make the contacts, build the bridges so volunteers can go to the people who need some kind of help, Those needing more service than we are able to provide can be referred to other agencies. When people help somebody else, both are helped and grow. There is benefit on both sides. So, who do we thank? Ourselves? The others? Let's be thankful for each other, for being helped and the ability to help others.
