26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 25, 1988 Gamblers win opener by 5-4 score The Greenbank Gamblers got the 1988 fastball season off on the right foot last Monday night as they edged the defe cham- pion Stouffville Betz Pools by a 54 score. The win did not come easily for the Gamblers as first the weatherman and then the Stouff- ville team did their best to deter Greenbank from winning their home opener. It rained for at least an hour before game time but the Green- bank diamond recovers extreme- ly well from rain showers and with some hard work on the dia- mond by the Gambler players the game got underway at 9:00 p.m. Mark Goreski (the winner of the Most Valuable Pitcher Award last year in the Oshawa "A" Divi- sion) was on the mound for Greenbank to oppose Jim Chilvers of Stouffville. The game see-sawed back and forth as each team had the lead more than once. Stouffville had a two run lead in the first inning on Randy Grants 2 run homer but Greenbank got one back in their half of the inning as George Red- shaw scored on Rod Reals long triple. The Gamblers took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning as Rod Real singled and scored ahead of Trevor Till's long home run. But in the top of the seventh in- ning an infield error allowed Stouffville to score a pair of runs and take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the last inning. The Gamblers fought back to tie the game with George Red- shaw's triple being the key kit and the teams headed for extra 'innings Finally in the bottom of the ninth inning John Foster got hold of a Jim Chilvers fast ball and put it out of the park and the Gamblers had won their home opener. Winning pitcher Mark Goreski, struck out seven Stouffville bat- ters in the game while losing pit- cher Chilvers fanned eleven Gambler batters. The next home game in Green- bank Park is next Monday night when Port Perry XL are the visiting team. The story on the weekend was lack of offense as the Greenbank Bats were strangely quiet during their three games. The Greenbank pitching and defense were excellent but for some reason the attack was sputtering. The Gamblers got excollent pit- ching from Russ Korbak (v'ho returned to the Gamblers airler a one year sabbatical) and newcomer Wayne Wells, but lack of hits did the Greenbank Squad in, Korbak spun a nifty five hitter as Greenbank downed the Rich- mond Hill Merchants by a 4-2 score on Saturday afternoon and Wayne Wells lost a tough one as he only allowed Oshawa one base hit (a single) but still lost by the 1-0 score. The Richmond Hill Merchants came into the tournament as the favourites with their pitching staff of Jim Chilvers (Stouffville) 'and Glen Moreland (Newmarket) but they were put out of the tour- ny in two straight games as they lost to the York Merchants 1-0 and then the 4-2 loss to the Gamblers.
