On Saturday night at Town Hall 1873 a sold-out very warm crowd found out Berlin knew what he was singing about as an Outrageous' evening was had by all. A bit raunchy, a bit bluesy, a lot glitzy, Craig Russell was out to wow 'em in his debut home town appearance. And no one went home disappointed. From his opening signature Carol Channing number (in fire engine red bustier and boa) to his group finale en- core 'Maybe This Time' from - Cabaret, the international imper- sonator (and Port Perry native) delivered the goods: patter, chat- ter, ballads, quips -- and ribaldry. The convivial crowd ate it all up while a new star was also born -- the anonymous 'tooth termite' seated in the front row. Devised by Town Hall Board member Howard Hall as a fun- draiser to help give the tower a needed 'Facelift', the Craig Russell 'Outrageous' show established several firsts: Town Hall's first "adult" entertain- ment, Russell's first show with his new back-up talent -- singer/pianist Ian Craig McKin- non, singer/composer Jennifer Noble, and accompanist/com- poser David Dramer on keyboard (with Craig's wife Lori backstage), and the town's first . mini Vegas-type review. It all clicked. McKinnon was a special crowd pleaser right from his question "Is this really Queen Street?" With his heavy-duty talent he led his listeners easily through such favourite numbers as "New York, New York" and '"'No Business Like Show Business' while the crowd enthusiastically joined in. He also served as a low-key M.C., © introducing Russell's various 'ladies' and keeping up an inter- change with the audience. A surprise change of pace was provided by Cyndi Lauper lookalike Jennifer Noble, who belted her own composition ac- companied by Kramer on keyboard. This up and coming pair have a bright entertainment future. Their mentor, the show's star, was happy to share the spotlight pleting his sequel film Outrageous IT which opens in Montreal on June 1,, Russell was in fine form as he minced, ground, high- kicked, and burlesqued his (her?) way through Bette Midler, Bar- bra Streisand (same wig) (and how could she escape his darts?), Connie Francis, classic Garland and Minelli portrayals -- and the unforgettable grande dame Mae West in slinky white satin ("I E% ANNOUNCEMENT Jake and Barb Bisschop are happy to announce the for- thcoming marriage of their daughter, Janet Lynn to Joseph Mark, son of Florimond and Donna Goris, on August 20, 1988 at the Port Perry United Church. don't know much about politics -- but I could go for. a good par- tyman") fielding 'queries'. Make of that one what you will. Even Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald put in brief appearances. The Fitzgerald bit was especial- ly engaging as, getting to "play with myself', Russell did a sur- prising duet -- Louis Satchmo Armstrong pairing up with Ella to create some really surprising sounds for sure -- bass and treble. Clever -- and proof indeed that Russell's voice is potent stuff when he chooses to give it free reign. Streisand's "Evergreen" was another showstopper of the same quality. Between show sets Howard Hall conducted a fundraising T-shirt auction. Original-design "Outrageous" Tees were auction- ders, all proceeds for the 'Facelift' Fund. These shirts were to be personally autographed by the agreeable star who had con- tributed so much to the evening's success. Welcome back Craig. You disproved Tom Wolfe -- one can "go home again'. Hall patrons got a bargain in seeing this premier performance. And hey, Craig - great legs, baby! Watch for news of Town Hall 1873's upcoming '88/89 Subscrip- tion Series in the near future.
