16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 31, 1988 Party for new school addition For the students at Greenbank Public School, the days of hold- ing special events outside or in crowded classrooms are officially over. In an impressive ceremony at- tended by close to 400 students, parents, teachers and special guests last Thursday evening, the new addition to the school was opened. Built at a cost of about $850,000, the addition does sever- al things: gives the school a bright new gym-auditorium, staff rooms, offices and space for a li- brary. And as several speakers noted during the ceremonies, the addi- tion provides a bridge with the past. The design has linked the present school with the original brick school house built in 1909, and still used as two classrooms. Bob Martin, area 1 superinten- dent with the Durham Board, said this link gives students of today "an appreciation of the atmosphere and historical-context of the old school." - The opening ceremonies were held in the new gym, which was nicely decorated in the school co- lours ot yellow, green and white. It was more of a party atmosphere with the school choir singing sev- eral songs, Scugog trustees Joyce Kelly and Debbie Tredway acted as MC's for the evening, and there were re- marks and short speeches from several platform guests including MPP Sam Cureatz, Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor, Durham Edu- cation director Bruce Mather, Board chairman Sandra Lawson, principal Cathy Hamilton and Sue Morrison representing the Mini- stry of Education, Gifts to the school for the oc- casion were presented by Mr. Cu- reatz, Jack Lee of the Port Perry Legion, Doris Hill of the UCW Greenbank and Shirley Lee of the Womens Institute. In her address, Mrs. Hamilton paid tribute to her staff at the school who worked through the construction phase. And she noted that no longer will special events have to be held outside (at the whim of the weather) or music festivals in the Sunderland Hall. She said the people who live in the community of Greenbank have a fine place raise their chil- dren, and a great school. Assisting in the actual ribbon- cutting ceremony were two grade one students Jeffrey Couch and Ryan McBride. ] Following the ceremonies, parents and guests were ecnour- aged to tour the new addition and the remainder of the school. . Board chairman Sandra Law- son said the cost of the new addi- tion was paid entirely from the the Board's budget. "Your tax dollars made possi- ble this opportunity," she stated. And Mrs. Lawson had words of praise for trustees Kelly and Tredway for their efforts towards getting the new addition built. MPP Sam Cureatz presented a picture of the Queen and an Ontario flag, accepted by Teresa Han- cock. 1 [] 1 i | 1 [] 1 1 1 1 1 LJ ? 1 1 [ 1 1 [] 1 [ | [ ] [|] 1 | 1 [ [ 1 [ ] 1 [] | ] ] J 1} [] ] [] ] ] [] [] 1 | ' ] ] 3 PAINFUL FEET!
