Russell, who is well known for his film Outrageous and for his many female impersonations, was In top form as he played to a full house in this first-time Port Perry appearance since he attended school here as a young boy. Prince Albert excluded from re-cycling plans The household garbage re- cycling program will start in Port Perry on June 7, but the program will not include homes in Prince Albert. Glenda Gies, manager of Dur- ham Ra-cyeling, the non profit company that collects the garbage from the blue boxes at curbside, told the Star Monday morning the reason Prince Albert is not includ- ed in the re-cycling program is be- cause that community. does not have municipal garbage collec- tion. "That's the policy that has been established. The program (re- cycling) is only in urban areas which have municipal garbage collection," she said. Ms. Gies said that originally. she had been under the impression that municipal garbage pick-up in- cluded the Prince Albert area. While Prince Albert is out for the re-cycling program, house- holders in Port Perry will start re- ceiving their blue boxes towards the end of this week. Complete instructions on what type of household garbage can be recycled will come with the blue boxes. The grogram is voluntary. lass, cans and newspapers are to be left in the blue boxes at curbside on regular garbage pick- up days. The material for re- cycling in the blue boxes is picked up from the curbside by trucks from Durham Re-cycling. The first blue box pick-up in Port Perry will be Tuesday, June 7, for those residents who have their regular trash collected on Tuesdays. And it will be Thurs- day, June 9 for those residents (Turn to page 2) Vol. 122 No. 27 Tuesday, May 31, 1988 Copy 50¢ 44 Pages Office employees with Scu- gog Township could strike as ear- ly as June 8 if mediation fails to bring about a settlement in a con- tract dispute. John Cherry, a national rep with the Canadian Union of Pub- lic Employees (CUPE) told the Star last week the 11 employees who are part of a newly formed bargaining unit have already taken a vote which was 90 per cent in favour of strike action, if neces- sary. Mr. Cherry admitted the Township and the employees "are a long way apart" in negotiations, but he added the fact that the un- Strike looming for Township employees ion has agreed to mediation means "there is some room for move- ment." The 11 inside workers were certified as part of CUPE earlier this year and are now attempting to negotiate a first contract with the municipality. Mr. Cherry said the issue of wages is the main stumbling block between the two sides. They are seeking an across the board pay increase of about $2 per hour, or about $4,000 annually. The current pay range for the employ- ees is between $6 and $9.37 per hour. About six weeks ago, the employees rejected an offer of $1 per hour, after learning that senior management staff with the Town- ship had received salary increases in the $5,000-$6,000 range this year. The two sides are scheduled to meet with a mediator on June 7. Mr. Cherry said if mediation fails to resolve the differences "the employees most likely will strike the next day." In an unusual move, the 11 employees have signed a letter to the editor to inform the public of the possibility of a strike, and the reasons why. That letter is printed on the letters to the editor page in this week's Port Perry Star.
