Sa CORI ont ss RIT EE EE REEIBH 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 31, 1988 Nestleton-Caesarea News by Mabel Cawker Claremont Hosts Annual Meeting Claremont Branch '"'hosted" the Ontario South Women's Institute District Annual, held at the United Church on May 25, 1988. Mrs. Helen McKean, our new District President, chaired the day long meeting, assisted by Secretary Mrs. Hazel Coates. The financial report was given by Treasurer Mrs. Jean Carnochan. Provincial Board Director Mrs. Doris Dunn formally ratified the District Directors, and presented an indepth report of Provincial Board proceedings held April 25 - 28 in Toronto. The meal served at the noon hour was a culinary delight...all enjoyed the succulent roast beef dinner topped off with lemon pie, tea and coffee! Following the noon break, the head table guests were introduc- ed from five Districts - York West, York North, York Centre, York East & Ontario North. The introductions were made by Past President Mrs. Alva Thompson. A lovely hour long programme of harmonious music brought back a feeling of nostalgia... presented by terrific entertainers "The Joyful Noise" with Alma Olson & Dolores Prussak singing old and modern numbers accompanying themselves on Accordian, Harp and sometimes Guitar. The In Memoriam was con- ducted for three faithful members who had passed away during the year. Two members sang beautifully "In The Garden." District. Co-ordinator Bernice Andrews was the District Representative who attended the Conference held at Kingston, May 13-14 re-Program Planning and Fundraising - also re-cycling, and gave a detailed report. 396 delegates attended! The Guelph W.I. office has an interesting video suitable for Women's In- stitutes on "A Century of Change." The District Public Relations officer, Mrs. Mabel Cawker was presented with a District Life Membership for years of ser- vice...by the Board Director Mrs. Dunn - a pleasant sur- prise...Mabel was almost speechless for once! But - the (formerly Knobby's Pizza) 985-2225 honour was appreciated! Mrs. Aldene Evans was the ex- cellent pianist for the day long meeting. Claremont Village is celebrating 150 years in June, and we wish these fine folks a great celebration! . Dr. Cheryl L. Cawker, graduated on Friday, May 27, 1988 from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry. Cheryl was presented with the Canadian Association of Op- tometrists Award of Merit! She is the daughter of Arthur & Carroll Cawker of Sudbury, and grand- daughter of Sam & Mabel Cawker of Nestleton. Dr. Cheryl L. Cawker will be practising in Peterborough! Our warmest congratulations. On Saturday afternoon, follow- ing the graduation, Cheryl and a friend Roque Panza, of Uruguay, South America, (who is attending University of Toronto, in his 4th year, and is currently enrolled in the Metallurgy & Materials Science Engineering Pro- gram)...and Cheryl's parents Ar- HOMELITE Gas Powered String Trimmers thur & Carroll Cawker of Sud- bury, and aunt & uncle Vi & Adam Finnigan of North Bay, called on Sam & Mabel Cawker at the farm for a visit...as they were unable to attend the ceremony...What a delightful surprise! Over the tea cups we had a wonderful time cat- ching up on all the news...and so good to see the Finnigans. Adam still has his wit and terrific sense - of humour! What an interesting afternoon we had! At the weekly euchre those to be congratulated are: Lois Lowery came in first with 77. Second prize winner was Sharon Gooding with 75. Low score - Doris Nottingham with 41. Dorothy Edwards won the prize for the most lone hands re - the month of May with 10. Nestleton Presbyterian Church On a lovely summer morning, the congregation of Nestleton Presbyterian Church met with David Faulkner as minister at 10 a.m. Mrs. Joyce Taylor ably presided at the organ. Speaking on the text from Philippians 4: 8 we were advised to make a choice of things of good report - thinking, seeing, hearing, talking, doing - so that our lives will be filled with the right values. Rev. Fred Swann is visiting family members in Ireland, and hopes -to return in June to the pulpit. The Board of Managers has "reserved the Nestleton Communi- ty Centre for a church supper on Sept. 30. Sympathy Extended We were very saddened to learn of the passing of Gail Hiemstra's grandmother, Mrs. Millie Thorpe of Edmonton, Alta. Mrs. Thorpe visited the Hiemstra family a few years ago in Nestleton and made many friends. She was a delightful lady...and yours truly was privileged to have tea with her while she was in Nestleton. Gail went west to see her grama while she was ill in hospital! Millie Thorpe will be very much missed by relatives and friends! Our sympathy from this area to Gail Hiemstra and family! Our sympathy goes out to Harold Wheeler in the passing of his beloved wife Muriel. She hadn't been well this past winter in Florida, and we understand she died while on the way home. Muriel was a favourite with friends in Nestleton, and she sang in the church choir, and she will be sadly missed by all! Nestleton United Church On a bright, warm Sunday mor- ning, greeting at the door were Wilma Wotten & Nicholas Malcolm. The usher was Dwight Davis. The choir sang, "I know Where I'm Going" and the children's theme was capably taken by Carol Hill. Mavis Brodie...who is a Com- missioned deaconess of the Presbyterian Church of England, presented the message, "Reaching Out - Reaching Up" with text from Psalm 8: 23-27, read by Riehard MacKenzie, Clerk of Session. This lovely ser- vice closed with Hymn, "As Comes The Breath Of Spring" with Gwendolyn Malcolm at the organ. Ordination Service Our warmest congratulations tc Rev. Doreen Van Camp of Blackstock, who was ordained by the Bay of Quinte Conference in Wall Street United Church, Brockville on Sunday, May 29 at 3 p.m. Family and many friends attended the ceremony! Rev. Doreen Van Camp will be continuing her work at the St. James in the Valley Church! Social Cliff & Chris Davis "'hosted" a lovely luncheon on Friday last for their mom, Christina Henderson. who is returning home to Edin burgh, Scotland, on June 2. Friends Neta Fish & Mabel Cawker were invited guests, and enjoyed the luncheon, the stimulating conversation, and the Davis hospitality very much! A very nice occasion! Cancer Campaign Over The Top Again Doris Taylor, Chairperson, for the 1988 campaign re- the Township of Scugog, has the final figures in. We're over the tog again with $33,094.89...that is $3,094.89 more than last year. In Cartwright - the total with Captain Pat Sleep in charge... we have over $1,000.00 more than last year, which was approx. $6,000.00 The Society wishes to say a sincere word of appreciation to al who helped in any way to make it the success it was - taking in cap tains - volunteers - the generous donors - and the Campaigr Chairperson and Executive.
