In fact, the - grade 8 math whiz at R.H. Cor- - nish School wasn't stumped by * any of the 25 questions on the « Gauss test. He scored a perfect 150/150, the only perfect mark of 'the 362 students in Durham who - 'tackled the contest, and among just a handful of kids from across Canada to get such a score. Evan, along with Kevin Greenwood, a grade six student at R.H. Cornish, both did very well on respective math contests re- cently and both will attend the Re- gional Math Awards Presentations, in Oshawa June 9. Evan wrote the Gauss (named after a mathematician) exam for grade 8 level students, and Kevin Roy the Jr. Math Test set by the Na- tional Math League. Kevin recorded a mark of 34 out of 40, which tied him for 8th place in Ontario, and was just four marks off the best recorded in all of Canada. Math, of course, is Kevin's fa- vourite subject (his grades are in the 90's) and he does well in all other subjects, too. It took him about 25 minutes to answer the 40 very tricky ques- tions on the Jr. Math Test. Evan Hildreth completed the Gauss test in about 35 minutes (students were allowed an hour) "I always look for the short way to find the answer, rather than the long way," he said. And he said he didn't find the test particularly difficult. "It wasn't as tough as I thought it was going to be." Evan knocks down near per- fect marks in his grade 8 math work at school and is taking grade 9 courses before school in the mornings. Both young math students said they hope to continue study- ing this subject in university, and Evan is looking towards a career in engineering.
