Bill was also an Oddfellow for some 40 years and his Lodge in Port Perry donated money for diamond lights in his memory. And there is now a plaque In honour of that at Joe Fowler Park. During the business period, plans were made to look after the June birthday party at the nursing home. Several members volunteered to help. Mention was made of the proposed publicity booth at the Port Perry Fair in September. The District Picnic is to be held in Uxbridge, July 12th. The theme of the program on 'International Affairs" was beautifully planned by Mabel Cawker, with several members portraying different countries such as Spain, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Greece, Hawaii & India. Mabel gave an excellent presentation on the motto "Friendship is a good world in- vestment and lasts a lifetime". Margaret Cornish recited one of Pauline Johnstons' famous poems, and there were other readings on 'Brotherhood' - all in all, a very worthwhile program, which begain with the singing of the "Hymn Of All Nations" - a most appropriate choice! PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 14 1988 -- 31 Obituary Mary Eleanor Sweetman pass- ed away at the Port Perry Com- munity Hospital on Saturday, March 19, 1988 in her 78th year. She was born in Cherrywood, On- tario on August 16, 1910 to the late Russell Carter and Janet Tweedie. At the age of three, Mary and her family moved to Scugog Island where she received her for- mal education at the '"'Head" school (currently Scugog Museum) and later Port Perry High School. On July 4, 1931 she was married to: Stewart McDermott Sweetman. Mary started a small business during World War II when gasoline was rationed. She chauf- feured people to their desired destinations thus providing a much needed service to the com- munity. In 1949 she acquired her cab license and started her own Taxi Company in Port Perry, which she owned and operated for 26 years. Mary was a valued member of the Senior Citizen Club and ac- tively involved in organizing their bus tours and day trips. She had many hobbies in- cluding crafts, crosswords, play- ing cards (especially bridge) and was an avid reader. She also thoroughly enjoyed many years as an active member of the bowl- ing league. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family. Mary was predeceased by her husband Stewart in 1976. Beloved mother of Eleanor (Mrs. Allan Cawker), Carole (Mrs. John Obituary Mary Sweetman Carnwith) both of Oshawa, Keith Sweetman of Port Perry, Thelma (Mrs. Alex McMillen) of Scar- borough, Peter Sweetman and Beverly Travis of Port perry. Loved Grandmother of 17 grand- children and 15 great grand- children. Sister of Helen, (Mrs. Campbell MacMaster) of Port Perry, Alan Carter of Scugog Island, Tot (Mrs. Murray Holtby) of Manchester and predeceased by Clarence Carter. A private family service was held at the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry on Monday, March 21, 1988. Cremation followed. Rev. Donald Tansley Officiated. 4% Mary Sweetman Ernest Healey Ernest Edgar Healey passed away at the Port Perry Hospital on Sat., March 5, 1988. He was in his 90th year. Ernie Healey of Port Perry was born in Parry Sound, March 10, 1898. He was the son of the late John William Healey and Annie McDonald. As a boy Ernie lived in Brockville. Ernie moved to Warkworth and earned his living in farming and carpentry. In 1914 Ernie met Doris Poole and they were married in Oct. of 1920. In the year 1927 they moved to Oshawa, where they lived for 30 years. Ernie and Doris had 3 children, Rosie, Marguerite and Russell. Ernie worked for G.M. for 36 years. The family moved to Port Perry in 1957 and Ernie retired in 1963. Ernie was a foun- ding member and past president of the Port Perry Senior Citizens Club. Being very cheerful and outgoing, Ernie enjoyed bowling, playing euchre and in his younger years was an avid checker player. He was once the champion of the Ontario District. Family and friends will miss the gatherings that were held on many occasions in Ernie's home. His door was always open to anyone who cared to stop and visit. The Healy Family would like to thank Ernie's euchre bud- dies for thier continued support and friendship over the many years. Ernie Healey was predeceased by his beloved wife Doris (1980) loved Father of Marguerite Evans and Russell Healey and Predeceased by Rosie Mack (1969). He was the loved grand- father of 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry on March 9th, 1988. Interment Oshawa Union Cemetery.
