One BIG Location on Port Perry's South Side! PHILP PONTIAC-BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Dr., Port Perry 2885-84749 SALE HOURS: Monday to Thursday 9 AM to 9 PM; Friday to 5 PM; Saturday to 4 PM Weed spraying in Lake may not include channel A decision on whether to spray for weeds in the navigation channel on Lake Scugog will like- ly be made this week. Lake Scugog was not included in the spraying contract this year for navigation channels in the Kawartha chain, according to Brian O'Neill, with the Trent- Severn Commission, the federal agency responsible for the naviga- tion channels in the Kawarthas. The Scugog channel was not sprayed for weeds last summer, because the Commission felt it wasn't necessary. } Mr. O'Neil told the Star last Friday that he will be making an inspection of the Scugog channel this week, and a decision to spray or not will be based on the extent of the weed growth. Aquatic weeds have already started to appear around the Port Perry waterfront, and area that will be sprayed in the next week or so through a joint effort of the Township, the Chamber of Com- merce and Port Perry Marina oper- ator John Mackie. He told the Star on Friday that so far, he has not been hearing complaints from boaters about weeds in the navigation channel. Jeff Carpenter with the Mini- stry of the Environment in Peter- borough, said last week weed growth generally in the Kawarthas appears to be heavier than last year. He said there are several dif- ferent kinds of weeds native to the lakes, along with milfoil. Milfoil was a major problem on Lake Scugog for three years in the early 1980's, but the growth declined in the last couple of years. One reason for this decline is believed to be the appearance of a small moth which lays eggs in the milfoil leaves. The larvae con- sume the plant during the winter months. Property owners along Lake Scugog are permitted to spray for weeds in front of their land, but they must obtain a permit from the Ministry of the Environment office in Peterborough. Fresh gravel blamed A 24 year old Ashburn area woman escaped a single car acci- dent. with only minimal injuries June 15. Durham Regional Police say a 1985 Hyundai driven by Wendy Dundas hit fresh gravel, went out of control and hit the ditch, while headed west on the Scugog- Whitby Town Line. The accident happened at 9:15 a.m. and no charges were laid. \ IMPAIRED DRIVER An Oshawa man was charged with impaired driving following a - single car accident in Poy Petty early Saturday moming. Durham Regional Police report - a car driven by Peter Thomas Woolley, 35, was headed sofith- bound on Lilla St., just north of Regional Road 8, at 1:30 a.m. According to police the car knocked over two mailboxes and had its front wheel broken off be- fore coming to rest south of Dur- ham Road 8. Substantial damage was done to the car, a 1988 Grand Prix, and to the mailboxes. CAR AVOIDS DEER AND WINDS UP IN DITCH In order to avoid hitting a deer on the Scugog Island Rd., a wom- an wound up putting her car in the ditch, causing approximately $3,500 damage. The accident happened at 10 a.m. June 16. Luckily, the driver wasn't injured. PISTOL STOLEN A pellet pistol stored in a Port Perry High School locker was sto- len sometime June 14. The theft was reported to Dur- ham Regional Police at 11:30 a.m. by the owner of the gun, an Uxbridge teenager attending PPHS. ATTEMPTED B&E'S Two Port Perry Plaza stores were victims of attempted break- ins recently. The owners of Lifestyle 2000 and In Fashion called Durham Re- gional Police June 16 when they realized someone had tried to spin the locks on their front door. REMINDER ...
