Gord Rumpel says he doesn't believe in luck, but he's been as lucky as a four leaf clover clutch- ing a rabbit foot ever since Matt's Scooter hit the race track. It's a beautiful farm, complete with an old-fashioned farmhouse, a cavernous barn, racetrack, well- kept fences and a pond full of geese. But the farm is known for more than just it's scenery. "OTRA" stands for On The Road Again, one of the most val- uable horses in pacing history, now retired to stud in the U.S. In 1985, at the peak of his rac- ing career, Road was estimated to be worth somewhere between six and 12 million American dollars. Gord Rumpel had picked him out at a yearling sale in New York for a mere $10,000. And Gord says luck has nothing to do with it. These days, Road has taken somewhat of a hack seat at the Rumpel farm, even though many of his sons and daughters are growing up there (106 Road yearlings were registered in 1987).
