The theme for the event was "Over the Rainbow" which was carried out for the entire evening. District Commissioner J. Swain welcomed everyone after which Brown Owl A Malcolm proposed the Toast to the Queen and O'Canada sung. Commissioner in- troduced the head table guests after which Mrs. J. Dana Lee propos- ed the Toast to the Mothers to which Mrs. M. Adams replied. After Grace which was said by Mrs. A. Davis a delicious chicken dinner was enjoyed. Following the customary thank you to the caterers, a volunteer group of mothers, Colour Party, the girls and their leaders paraded to the United Church where the Awards Presentations and Fly-Up Ceremonies were made in an im- pressive programme. . . Following the Presentation of the Colours to Rev. Davis and his words of welcome the Service Stars were presented by the leaders to the Brownies. The fly- up ceremony was held when the following Brownies flew up through the Rainbow. Robyn Cliff, Christina Clark, Erin Hasswll, Dana Lee, Belinda Espie advanced to Pathfinders through the Rainbow. The Pathfinders were presented with their service stars. Two Pathfinders, Lorrie Swain and Jill VanCamp were presented with their Canada Cords, the highest award in the Guiding Movement. Presentations were made by the Units, by the Depu- ty District Commissioner Dyer, the Division Commissioner Curtin was unable to be present and the parents. Councillor Neil McLaughlin presented Lorrie and Jill with the Ontario Provincial Plaques. The Rangers Service Stars were presented and the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards presented by Leader Shirley Turner. Gold - Julie Byers, Esther Kelly and Silver - Jennifer Fletcher. 5 Year Long Service Bars were presented to Mrs. S. Clark, Mrs. J. Martyn and Mrs. W. Bentley. Four leaders were honoured on their retirement - namely D. Crouter, S. Clark, W. Bentley and J. Lee. Following Taps the Colour Par- ty retired and another impressive evening came to a close. Congratulations to John Green and Linda Jones who were mar- ried in a beautiful wedding on Saturday afternoon in Mt. Zion United Church. Many friends and relatives from this area attended this happy event. On Sunday an interesting fami- ly event took place when Terry and Kelly Gatchell and baby Sarah along with Terry's mother Dianne Gatchell travelled to Fair- view Lodge where they joined 94 year old George Bray along with Ruth Gimblett of Columbus. After Sherry opened her many beautiful gifts and had thanked everyone a tasty lunch was serv- ed and a special time enjoyed. On Sunday afternoon a Venning Family bridal shower was held in honour of Penny Venning at the home of grandmother Mrs. Ella Venning. After Penny had open- ed her many lovely gifts she replied fittingly. A delicious lunch and a social time was enjoyed. On Saturday afternoon five members of the unofficial Fresbie Champ team of Ryerson Institute of Technology, Toronto paid a visit to Blackstock. Pam Mashke, Leo Guiliani, Jim Tyl, John Tan- ner and Gary Cerchulloli enjoyed a barbecue with Cathy Paisley, Shirley Hanson and Gord Paisley. Cathy gave the visiting Toronto- nians a walking tour of the village. The city folk enjoyed their rural experience and were par- ticularly impressed by the quiet and friendliness of the country. Sorry to report that Mr. Wes Pearce and Mrs. Elva VanCamp were both taken to Port Perry Hospital last week. We hope you are both resting more comfor- tably now. Recent dinner guests of Kathleen and Albert Watts were Ruby and Fred Griffen and Joyce Taylor and little granddaughter Danielle. On Sunday afternoon the descendants of the late John and Ann Toms met for the Toms fami- ly picnic at the home of Harold and Eileen McLaughlin. The children enjoyed swimming in the pond and a programme of games conducted by Janis St. John and Linda Bradburn. About 50 family members enjoyed the pot luck picnic supper. Afterward a sur« prise bridal shower was held in} honour of Elizabeth Kelly and Peter Peeters. After they had, opened the many gifts delivered to them by garden tractor and cart, they thanked everyone. Much visiting was enjoyed. Nancy and Bob Bryans along with 175 relatives, friends and co- workers attended a retirement dinner for Nancy's uncle Harold Wilkins of Hampton who had been an employee for 45 years with Oshawa Wood Products now Henry Buildall at Courtice. About 40 descendants of the late May Gaug and Morley Wilkins held their annual picnic on Sun- day at the home of Patti and Rick Alpe (a great granddaughter) at their home on Hwy 57. June 1st by Helen Bradburn P.R.O. With visitors from six neighbouring W.1.'s and visitors we opened the meeting by singing the Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. Pat Sleep introduced Shirley Turner who after teaching Public School for 36 years has time to travel with her husband Roy. She showed pictures of places in Asia. With her historical background we felt as if we were travelling with them. For break at half time, Joan Grove played her accordian for a sing-a-long and everyone had a stretch. Shirley answered questions relating to her trip. She also had souvenirs from the various coun- tries on display. Lunch and a time for visiting was enjoyed. The meeting closed with O'Canada. The afternoon Unit of the United Church Women met at the lovely lakeside home of Mrs. GracgrHall on Tuesday, June 14. The thirteen ladies in attendance partook of a lovely potluck picnic dinner. As it was the last meeting before the summer recess there was no serious business. For the program, Mrs. Hall conducted two Bible Quiz Contests. As Miss Mavis Brodie, one of the members, is moving to a new home she was presented with a surprise pantry shower. After opening her many useful gifts Mavis thanked the ladies for their generosity. She has been residing with the Halls and is moving to an apartment at David Malcolms. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction and a time of fellowship followed. This Friday, 4-7 p.m. Saturday 9-2 the Youth group will be holding a car wash at the high school. This is your opportunity to have a shiny car without any work! Graduate Julie Bryant, daughter of George and Brenda Bryant, Blackstock, graduated May 28, 1988 from Canadore College, North Bay with a diploma in Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Manag.ment. Julie, a graduate of Cartwright High School, has accepted a posi- tion at the Commonwealth Club of Ottawa.
