Region opens $700,000 recycling centre 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 5 1988 (From page 2) The cost of the building and equipment of $700,000 was paid jointly by the Region and provin- cial governments Ren Dunn, director of Ontario Multi-Materials Recycling Inc. said there are currently 700,000 blue boxes in use for household trash in Ontario, and that figure will double in the next couple of years. And Durham Region has the highest rate of citizen participa- tion of any Ontario municipality, he said. Provincial and Regional gov- ernment, along with soft drink makers and packagers are contrib- uting heavily to recyeling pro- grams in Ontario. Although the recycling blue box 'program in Scugog is now limited to the Port Perry area only for curb-side pick-up, any resident outside Port Perry who wants (to recycle household trash can drop off newspapers, glass bottles and tin cans at special depots at the transfer station just east of Blakc- tock or the Scugog dump on Re- gional Road 8. Probably one reason why re- cycling appears to be catching on with the public in Durham Re- gion is because of the wide pub- licity given the pending garbage crisis in this area. The Scugog dump will be filled in less than 18 months, and the Metro Toronto controlled dump in Pickering where most of Durham's trash now goes, will be filled in about two ycars time. Just where Durham's garbage will go when that day comes has not been determined. wn SGUARE BOY PIZZA Pizza -- Subs -- Lasagna -- Panzerotti -- 285-8448 SUBS These characters provided a colourful message hs igh at the Recycling Centre official opening last week.
