At local schools Childrens' achievements are highlighted Epsom and Area News by Jean Jeffery Our most interesting news this week is from the school. The achievements of the children is so important. They will take our lace soon and we want them to well prepared. Art awards were presented to Travis MacSween, Twyla Halli- day, Lindsay Gower, Ardon Crowder, Evan Gower, Mandy Schaal, Tanya Wilson, Jason Cooper, Dayna Ballagh and Paige Florence. Four children from Epsom Public School had work publish- ed in the Electric Circus - a Durham publication highlighting children's literary efforts - Graeme Powell, Daniel Lee, An- drea Sutherland and Ardon Crowder. Several children were representatives at a Literary Con- ference held at Epsom Public School and Uxbridge Public School. Christy Trotter, Jordon McKay, Christy Mahlberg, Graeme Powell, Angela Chann- ing, Shauna Simmonds, Paige Florence, Samantha Diotte, Mat- thew Saunders, Andrea Sutherland, Daniel Lee, Ardon Crowder, T.J. Flood, Diana Terlouw, Joel Van Veghel, Evan Gower, Lea-Anne Parish and An- drea Walley. Many children received tabs for running in the 50 KM and 100 KM Club. Of special note were Aaron Combdon and Travis VanKessel both of whom ran 150 KM. ~The Tony Goslin Memorial Sportsmanship award was presented to Bradley Hawker. Utica Farm Equipment Science Award went to Christy Mahlberg. The Roland Armstrong award for the hardest worker in Grades 1 and 2 was presented to Andrea Sutherland. Our sympathy to Joyce and Allen in the passing of her stepmother Mable Strong. Service will be on lawn The service next Sunday will be held on the south lawn followed by a pot luck picnic lunch. 'The Greenbank Orioles hosted their annual invitational tourna- ment on the weekend with eight teams competing for top spot. The most exciting game of the tourna- ment took place Saturday night between the Greenbank Orioles and the Greenbank Hillbillies. At the end of the first inning the Hillbillies managed to take the lead with two runs with the Orioles only scoring once. The RT Hs a Sa game was neck and neck right up to the end with the game going in- to two extra innings. In the first extra inning, the Hillbillies managed to get three up, three down. With the Hillbillies at bat, there was one out, and Phil Ber- trand on third base but they couldn't escape the Orioles ex- cellent defensive tactics and end- ed the inning with Phil still on third. In the top of the eighth Earl Phoenix, Dave Giannini and Jim Ward scored for the Orioles, mak- ing the score 14 to 11 in favour of the Orioles. The Hillbillies still had a bat left but the Orioles shut them down and won the B semi- final 14 to 11. The championship games took place Sunday with Seagrave Steel Buildings winning 6 to 5 over Square Boy to take the C division championship. The Orioles went on to win the B divi- sion against Sportsland 12 to 1.
