It was the first service of this kind to be held in Port Perry in several years. The service began at the Scu- gog Library where a wreath was placed in front of the Memorial and Book of Remembrance. The parade then moved from the library to Palmer Park where drums were piled on the ground and then the colours from Branch 419 and the Zone were placed on the drums by Rev. Padre A. Woolcock. The guest speaker for this spe- cial service was District F Com- mander Ken Jeffries, and much of his address was directed at those of the younger generation who gath- ered in Palmer Park for the occa- sion. He said services like the ids ead Service Drumhead and Remembrance Day in November are held by Legion branches as a way of remembering those who gave their lives in times of war. "We have vowed never to for- get them as long as we are here," he said. "Services like this one help keep Canada alert to the fact that we must remember them." He noted that while the vete- rans who served in World War 2 are now in their sixties and seven- ties, many of those who died in the wars were very young, 19 and 20 years of age. The Legion, he said is not an advocate of war, but a messenger of peace. Prayers were said by Padre Woolcock, and there were short speeches from Zone chairman Bob Archer, Branch 419 president Dave Durham, Zone Commander Doug Walton and Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor. 4 Prior to the Drumhead Service, a wreath of remembrance was placed at the Memorial In foyer of the Scugog Library.
