20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 12 1988 Big thank-you for Ashburn Canada Day Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton From the Ashburn Canada Day Picnic Committee a big thank you to everyone who made July 1°88 memorable. - To donors of goods, services and money. - To volunteers. - To all who attended. The video will be ready for viewing the first part of August - watch for details. I understand there were over 400 people in attendance, and all report a super time. Debbie Batten & Sharmen Porter have returned home following a week at summer camp near Haliburton. It's nice that former Ashburn residents call back to see us from time to time. Hilda Hopkins had a surprise visit last week from Wesley Bryant of Whitby and Thelma Webb of Florida. Wesley and Thelma lived at one time across the road from Hopkins with their parents, Stuart and Goldie Bryant and other members of the fami- ly. It has been some 44 years since Hilda and Thelma have seen one another. Big changes since then in our little town. I recall that the Bryant residence was a very popular place for dances a way back then. Last Friday night, we gathered together at the Community Cen- tre in honour of Jim and Elaine Ewing who were married recent- ly at Burns Church. They were the recipients of many lovely and useful gifts. The evening being ex- tremely hot, everyone enjoyed the refreshing punch and lemonade, while Jim and Elaine were busy opening their gifts. The evening Theatre workshop held in Port Perry! 'Whoops! The Star wishes to apologize for an error made in last week's story, "Summer Theatre um. The next session, by the way, starts July 18 and runs until July Workshop." 29. Cost for the entire two weeks The story incorrectly described (weekdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 the kid's theatre program as taking p.m.) is only $120 for children place in Greenbank, while in' fact the program is going on right here in downtown Port Perry, at the Port Perry United Church auditori- we THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM aged eight to 12. I bet the main topic of conversation was the weather. What else? We extend our sincere sym- pathy to Catherine Humphrey and her family, and all the Fisher family in the recent passing of Mrs. Myrtle Fisher. Mrs. Fisher was a resident of Fairview Lodge for many years. We will miss our visits with her when we visit the Lodge. Rev. McEntyre's sermfion title last Sunday morning was 'New Life in our Prayers', continuing in his summer series on Discipleship. Barb Porter presid- ed at the organ and rendered a lovely solo. Following the service we all enjoyed sandwiches and strawberry shortcake in the lower hall. Our thanks to Ron Death for providing the berries, and special thanks to our Kirk Guild ladies for their fine effort once again. As this is our last social event until fall, we hope everyone has a happy and safe summer. re. 2.28 si et A.
