As Of July 4, 1988 Richmond Hill squad Gamblers reach semi final at tournament The Greenbank Gamblers fastball club played a total of - seven games last week including the Richmond Hill tournament where they went down to the last four teams but lost a heart breaker in the semi final. The Greenbank team dropped their opening game in the tourna- ment to Bradford "Century 21" club as they had a 3-0 lead that they failed to hold and wound up losing by a 7-5 score to the Beaches league club. The Gamblers then racked up successive wins over Agincourt and Richmond Hill T.S.M. to qualify for the quarter finals on Sunday morning. And the quarter final saw them meet their league rival Stouffville Betz Pools and Greenbank defeated Stouffville by a 3-1 score to move to the semi finals. Russ Korbak was in top form on the Gambler mound as he shut out Agincourt and Richmond Hill T.S.M. and only allowed Stouff- ville a single run. Also the Green- bank defense was flawless and they picked up some key hits and ran the bases well. The final four teams in the semi finals saw Olean (New York) tackle Bradford in one semi final game and Greenbank met Rich- mond Hill "Save-On" Royals in the second match up. The Gamblers behind the steady pitching ot Mark Goreski had the lead through most of the game. They opened the scoring in the top of the second when George Redshaw singled and came around on Mark Goreski's triple. Richmond Hill took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning with key hits by Blair McBratney and Pat Acton, but the Gamblers came right back with 2 runs to take a 3-2 lead on hits by Don Phinney and George Redshaw. The Gamblers held this lead in- to the bottom of the seventh inn- ing when Richmond Hill bunched a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly ball for the tying run. The game remained deadlock- ed until the bottom of the ninth in- ning when Russ Korbak, who had relieved Mark Goreski in the ninth inning walked Pat Acton on a 3-2 pitch. He was sacrificed to second base, moved to third on the second out of the inning and scored the winning run on a pass- ed ball. A disappointing loss for Green- bank in this game but they played outstanding ball during the tour- nament and with any luck should have been in the championship game. Russ Korbak and Mark Goreski gave the Gamblers excellent pit- ching and in general the team played '"'Heads Up" ball during the extremely hot weekend. Earlier in the week the Gamblers raised their Oshawa ci- ty league first place standing to a 9-1 record with a 9-0 defeat of the Oshawa Juniors. Mark and Ken Goreski teamed up to shut out the Oshawa Squad with Terry Till, Brian Till, Rodd Real, Mark Goreski and Gary Baker leading the attack. On Wednesday night the Green- bank team travelled to Toronto to play Toronto A.V. Systems at Kew Beach and lost to the Toron- to team by a 6-2 score. The Gamblers were short- handed for this game but Mark Goreski pitched well with all Toronto Runs scoring on a pair of 3 run homers. George Redshaw, Mark Goreski and Dennis Ewart each had a pair of Greenbank hits with Brian Till adding a single safety. This week sees the Port Perry XL Eagles visiting Greenbank Park on Monday night with the Gamblers travelling to Stouffville for a Wednesday night encounter with Betz Pools. The following Monday night the visiting team will be Bradford 'Century 21' of the Toronto Beaches fastball league who will be playing one of their interlocking games with the Gamblers in Greenbank Park.
