WAP Wolters officially in race for Scugog Mayor seat La JOHN WOLTERS There are now two declared candidates who will be seeking the mayor's chair when Scugog voters go to the polls in the November municipal election. Former Township councillor John Wolters made his intentions "official" in an interview with the . Star last Thursday morning. He said he will run a cam- - paign that will stress long term planning (land use) for the munic- ipality to allow future develop- ment in an "orderly fashion." And he said the council should be applying good business practis- es when it comes to spending tax dollars. He is concerned that even with increased assessment growth, ~ the overall level of municipal spending this year was above. the rate of inflation. Mr. Wolters, 57, ig no strang- v er to municipal politics in Scugog Township. First elected in 1978, he spent two terms as the rep for Ward 4 (Cartwright) and another term as the area councillor. In 1985, he ran for the Mayor's seat against incumbent Jerry Taylor, who has announced he will not be seeking re-election this November. Though he has been off coun- cil for three years, Mr. Wolters shas remained active in communi- ty affairs, serving on the Nestle- ton Hall Board, the Cartwright Arena Board, and this year he is chairman of the Central Seven As- sociation. He said that during his terms on council, two of the most im- portant items that he worked for were the comprehensive zoning by-law and the move to market value assessment. He also worked to set up the Lake Scugog Task Force when there was concern about the quali- ty of the lake, and he has been a member of the Kawartha Conser- vation Authority. In a general sense, some of the issues he feels will have to be addressed by the new mayor and council after November include the need and cost of a municipal building; the traffic problems along Highway 7A; the need for better recreation facilities and how to pay for them; and a way to come up with a guarantee that ex- isting homeowners will not see their wells affected if new develop- ment is approved nearby. Mr. Wolters bought a dairy farm on Highway 7A just west of Blackstock in 1959. While he still owns the farm (with 60 milking cows) much of the day-to-day op- eration is now in the hands of a full time manager. _-- OR -- SHIRLEY ROAD, (R.R. 2, PORT PERRY) © PICR-YOUROWN RASPBERRIES . PORT PERRY 985-8722 Two years ago this month, Mr. Wolters suffered serious inju- ries in a tractor accident at his farm. He told the Star he has "just about 100 per cent" recovered from those injuries, but he has given up the physicial work that comes with day to day farming. For the past year or so, he has been working as a real estate agent for Walter Frank Realty in Port Perry, dealing mainly in the sale of farms and rural properties. He said that if elected mayor, he is prepared to devote his full energies to the job. He is the second candidate to officially announce his intentions to seek the mayor's chain of of- fice. Current area councillor Har- vey Graham made his announce- ment last February. And Port Perry councillor Howard Hall may also jump into the race. He told the Star recently he is giving it "very serious consideration." - ad] A III ~a" 8 Ll I PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 12 1988 -- 5 Foothall star suffers injuries in accident Former Canadian Football League star Terry Evanshen suf- fered major injuries in & car acci- dent July 4 in north Oshawa.
