Thurs Tue Wed Dominica 8:00 pm - of farm rural organization specialist in Durham West, the farm is not a safe playground for children these dass he wo the largest percentage atalities involve children 15 and younger. Farm machinery can be danger- ous in the hands of a youngster-- as well as a genuine attraction for active hands. But with the near disappearance of the extended family (with grandparents living on the farm), and with the reduction of hired hands, wives are needed in the fields--thus leaving kids on their own. A year and a half ago, the Be- - thesda-Reach Women's Institute performed a survey of farm fami- lies to see what service they might require most. Overwhelmingly, the response was "someone to look after the children while parents are working the farm." So on May 16, '88, the program was initiated, and according to Marlene, has been a real success. Farm parents are now able to call Agricultural Employment Services (formerly the Farm La- bour Pool) and book a "caregiver" with only a few hours notice--a call can be made anywhere be- tween 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for service the same day--as long as the caregivers aren't booked. So far, they've been booked pretty much solid through June and July. Two Early Childhood Education students from Durham College have been hired full-time for the cause as Marlene Joints out, "You have to attract the quality stu- dent." Part of their wages are paid by the farmer, and the difference is made up by two grants--one from Challenge '88, the other from Community and Social Services. Local organizations have also kicked in contributions for re- source kits for the girls to use while on the job. The caregivers aren't your aver- age babysitters, either. Marlene says they provide "quality time" with games, crafts and other activities to keep chil- dren occupied, leaming and happy. They also make the noon meal, and will, if necessary, finish sup- per preparations. The two women in charge of the operation, Barbara Evans of Ep- som and Corinne Croxall of Ux- bridge (the service covers all of Durham West, including Scugog, Brock, and Reach) have worked extremely hard setting the pro- gram up. "They're very committed to it," Marlene says. "Where the program goes from here is something they'll look at in the Fall." The service will end at the end of August, but if this season's success is any indication, it will Likely continue next summer as well. : to look after their children," Mar- lene emphasizes. g And now, thanks to On Farm Childcare, they can do it inexpen- sively. - For more information, call 985- 3831.
