26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 19, 1988 It has been several weeks since you've heard from the Bantam team from Greenbank but that was due to a team in the York- Durham league which folded and the Greenbank All Stars were scheduled to play a home at home series with them. This ended up with a 2 week layoff of action which almost hurt every player on the team. However, the Greenbank All Stars have postponed their regular seasonal play due to the Ontario Amateur Softball Assoc. playoffs which began with a 3 game series with Port Perry star- ting July 13 and what a series it was! The first game was held in Port Perry on a nice Wednesday night which was perfect for baseball ac- tion. However, the weather may have been nice but the Greenbank All Stars were just the opposite. It may have been due to the layoff of action. ) Greenbank dropped this game to Port Perry by the score of 3-1. Scoring for Greenbank was Mike Feasby who took a walk in the top of the fifth inning who was driven home by Dave Hopman's and Tom Uzell's singles. Port Perry just proved to be too powerful in this game for the Greenbank All Stars to handle, Mike Feasby handled the duties on the mound for Greenbank and chalked up 10 strikeouts! Mike performed with perfection but it was the defensive and offensive part of the All Stars which didn't measure up for this game. Port Perry took the lead in the series 1 game to none. Game two was hosted by the Greenbank All Stars on Friday, July 15 and the Hamlet of Green- bank saw some great softball action! The Greenbank All Stars had to win this game or the result would be eliminization from the playoffs. The All Stars were all geared up and ready to play. Greenbank got on the board first when Mike Feasby lined a single to right field, John Ennis drew a walk and Tim Timms blasted a double to right field driving in Feasby to make the score 1-0. With men on 2nd and 3rd, Brett Puckrin poked a triple to right field and brought in En- nis and Timms for a 3-0 score. Ken Winslow then came to bat with Puckrin on third and , ~~ sacrificed a bunt driving in Puckrin for a 4-0 score and the in- ning drew to a close. Port Perry came back with 1 of their own and it was Rob Mitchel who blasted a homerun to right centre field to close the gap 4-1. Greenbank, however, showed no mercy in their eyes and battl- ed for 3 more runs in the bottom of the second. Scoring for Greenbank were Tim Timms, Dave Hopmans and Brett Puckrin. - Driving them home were Ken Winslow and Scott Porter both with singles. The score, 7-1. Greenbank then got another in . the fifth inning when Brett Puckrin cracked.a single to cen- tre field and was driven to second by Ken Winslow's sacrifice fly and it was Scott Porter who got Puckrin the rest of the way around with a power blast double to centre field. The score was in- creased 8-1. Greenbank never stopped with the fire power of their bats and they poked in 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. John Ennis started things off with a tri- ple and was driven home by Tim Timms's single ending in an out. Dave Hopmans then poked an in- field single and was driven home by Brett Puckrin's double. The final score: 10-1. Greenbank played an extreme- ly tight defensive game and a strong offensive game. A job well done! Handling the pitching for Greenbank was Brett Puckrin who managed to keep his team in the game with 11 strikeouts. The series was now even at 1 game a piece. GAME THREE Game three was on Sunday, Jully 17 and what a game it was! The fans could be heard biting their nails for this one for it could have gone either way. It was Port Perry which dominated the first part of this game by getting 4 runs in 4 inn- ings and looked as if they were go- ing to overthrow the Greenbank Squad. However, Greenbank started a dramatic comeback. It started in the bottom of the fourth when Kevin Puckrin drew a walk as well as Ken Winslow. With 2 men on and one out, it was Scott Porter who ripped a double to left centre field, driving in 2 runs. Paul Kett Fary RECREATION then stepped up to hit a single to centre field bringing home Porter for a 4-3 score in favour of Port Perry. With 1 on and 2 out, John Ennis ripped a triple to left field and brought home Kett. Tim Timms then took his turn and brought home Ennis with a hard single to centre field. Thus, the score at the bottom of the fourth, Greenbank 5-Port Perry 4. Greenbank thought that a 1 run difference was not enough, so in the bottom of the fifth, Ken Winslow ripped a home run past Port's left fielder to make the score 6-4. Port Perry then got 1 back in the top of the sixth and closed the gap 6-5. Greenbank then took to the field in hope of winning the game without their last bats and what a dramatic finish. With 1 man on second for Port Perry, a hit was ripped to shortstop Paul Kett, who booted the ball and the runner Remember that hot weekend of July 9. Well, two select soccer teams from the Scugog Youth Soccer Club performed in the York Soccer Tournament. Not on- ly did they have to combat ex- treme temperatures but also some tough competition from various other.soccer teams from the Toronto area. The Squirt Select team playing two games on the Saturday (9th) and one on Sunday have nothing to be ashamed of. They lost their first game 2-1 to the York Squirt Team. Scoring for Scugog was Adam Hobbs. In the second game they show- ed no mercy to the St. Bernard's team coming out on top 4-0. Scorers were Ryan Moynes, Tyler Wootton, Blayne Kinnunen and Adam Hobbs. On Sunday their hard efforts and the heat finally caught up with them as they were beaten 6-0 by a very strong team from Martingrove. The Atom Select team perform-. ed just as well. They were up against teams from Mississauga, Martingrove and York. In the first game they lost 2-0 to the Mississauga team. Each player stuck together for the others which helped to come from behind. The second game they fought back on a goal by Todd Parry to tie 1-1 with Martingrove. On Sunday, just like the Squirt "team the heat caught up with them as they lost 3-0 to the York team. Overall this was a very good of- fort by both teams. The Greenbank All Stars are glad to see Dave Hopmans and Kevin Puckrin back from the disabled list and are also sorry to report Mike Feasby is out for a stretch of time with a sprained wrist. Greenbank's next O.A.S.A. series is against the powerful hit- ting squad of Claremont for the championship Ontario "Zone 3" and the right to represent their zone at the Ontario Summer Games in Hamilton on Aug. 19, 20, 21. Greenbank's next home game is Tues., July 19 at 8:30 to begin the 1st game of the series with Claremont. So fans, lets see you at the ball park supporting your home team.
