Guadeloupe teens on't like our mud It may be a heat wave for Port Perry, but for some young visi- tors from the Caribbean, last week's temperatures were just fine. Nathilia Jurvilliers, 16, and Claude Salome, 14, have been staying with Scugog Township families since July 17, part of a three week cultural visit to this country. They are from the French co- lonial island of Guadeloupe, popu- lation 300,000, and from what they've seen of Canada so far, they are im Nathilia is staying with the family of 14-year old Janet Kelly of Cadmus, while Claude is with Sarah Hobbs and her family on Scugog Island. They are part of a group of 17 young teens from the West Indies staying with families in Uxbridge, Stouffville and Toronto, a trip de- signed to give them a look at On- tario and have the chance to actu- ally live with Canadian families. For Nathilia and Claude, it is their first trip to Canada, and a chance to practise their conversa- tional English language skills. They have had visits to Niaga- ra Falls (very impressive) said the girls) the CN Tower, Ontario Place and Wonderland. But one thing that has not impressed them much is Lake Scugog. They won- der how anybody can swim in such a muddy body of water. Although their visit is not part of an exchange, both Janet and Sarah would like to pay a re- turn trip to Guadeloupe and have the chance to live with families there for a few weeks. And natu- rally, they'd like to make the visit in January. But Nathilia and Claude are also fascinated by the thought of Canadian winters of ice and snow and freezing temperatures. They have seen pictures of people skating on Lake Scugog last winter, and would like to try that experience some day.
