orn 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- alo August 3, 1988 by Wendy Clark As you drive by I'm sure that you can see several residents sit- ting oustide on the patio enjoying the gorgeous summer weather. Tuesday, July 19th during the wee morning hours several residents were treated to a special breakfast feast. The meal con- sisted of eggs, bacon, blueberry pancakes, toast, juice, and coffee. In the afternoon we had our mon- thly birthday party celebration. There were several children in at- tendance who played the piano & violin for us. A big thank you to the Seagrave UCW for an en- joyable afternoon, the cake, and for the gifts. During the week of 18-22 we also had bowling, Church - Prince Albert United Church, coffee hour, resident council meeting, euchre, crafts, bingo and movie. Over the last week of July (25-29) we had a Pioneer Week. To start the celebrations off we had the pleasure of Mr. Leonard Green from the Historical Museum come in to speak on the "History of Scugog". The follow- ing day was a quiz and discussion about the "good ole' days". In the evening a church service was pro- vided by the Port Perry Baptist faith. On Wednesday (27) a large group boarded a bus and headed west for a trip through the Men- nonite country in Kitchener. To pass the time on the way everyone joined in on a sing-song and then devoured donuts and cold drinks. First stop was made at the Farmers Market where everyone looked or bought some of the many homemade crafts or freshly baked food that was of- fered. Next stop was a delicious buffet luncheon at the Conestoga Inn. From there we took in a tour of Elmira, St. Jacobs, Hawksville and Kitchener. Many sights were taken in along with the homes, farms and people. We even saw a buggy factory. By this time we were starting to get tired and headed for home. But we made one more stop before getting home and that was at McDonalds. We all en- joyed a treat of ice cream cones and cold drinks. Thursday was a baking day with several ladies preparing apple & blueberry pies. Also we learned all about churn- ing butter and actually made some. A special thank you to Mrs. Doreen Kendall for coming in to give us this very interesting lesson. Throughout the evening hours we had a slumber party. Everyone in attendance wore their night time attire. 'Games were played and songs were sang. To end the night we had a feast of pizza. The last day of Pioneer Week (29) was spent with us hosting a quilt show. We had a display of approximately 20 quilts. The oldest quilt on display was made back in 1810. All the residents certainly enjoyed look- ing at all the quilts and baby quilts.
