a Tam nen an Bemisia ch 0 (= , 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tia August 3, 1988 Port XL Eagles reach final after win over arch-rival Gamblers For the second year in a row, Cold Springs has won the annual Port Perry fastball tournamant. Cold Springs, a small hamlet north of Cobourg, had a fairly easy time of it in the champion- ship game Monday evening as pitcher Roger Cole held the Port Perry XL Eagles to just three hits en route to a 7-0 victory. The veteran Cole, who won three games in this tournament and saved another, mixed his pitches beautifully, struck out seven Eagle batters and got rock solid defense from his team-mates. The Eagles, who had won a big victory Monday afternoon over Greenbank Gamblers to ad- vance to the championship game, never mounted a serious threat. Ken Irvine started the game on the mound for the Eagles and was relieved in the 4th inning by Law- rie Williams with the score 5-0. Williams and Irvine yielded 12 hits to the tough Cold Springs batters, and managed eight strike- outs. After scratching out of a couple of runs in the second in- ning, Cold Springs did most of the damage in the top of the 3rd ME ev tT Greenbank Gamblers ace hurler Mark Goreskl at work. with two out. Short-stop Andy Delgarno stroked a solid two strike triple to the fence which cashed in two more runs, then he scored himself on a single to make it 5-0. Cold Springs padded their lead with two more runs in the top of the 6th as the Eagles struggled to get some kind of an offensive threat off the ground. Their best chance came in the bottom of the Sth with Dave Dickson legging out an infield single. He was forced at second and the Eagles later had runners on first and second with one out. But a double play by Cold Springs snuffed this mini-rally, and the Eagles went down quietly in their last two at bats. As there was all weekend for this top calibre fastball tourna- ment, hosted by the XL Eagles of Port Perry, a good crowd was on hand for the championship game. Cold Springs took home $1,025 for their efforts, while the Eagles had to settle for $375. There was total prize money of $2400 in this 16 team tourna- ment. While the Eagles would dearly: have liked to win the champion- ship, the team played some excel- lent fastball just to make it to the final. The Eagles have struggled through league play this season, but their credible showing in this tournament may be an indication of better things to come with playoffs and OASA competition just around the corner. Port Perry started the tourna- ment with a couple of shut-out victories, 8-0 over Pickering and 4-0 over Toronto's Diamond Tow- ing. Then they lost 5-1 to Agin- court Juniors, but re-bounded be- hind some great pitching by Lawrie Williams to defeat Oshawa Juniors 3-0 and advance to the semi-final game against their arch- rival Greenbank Gamblers. To say that the Gamblers have been red-hot lately would be an under-statement. They haven't had a loss in more than ten games, rolled through the first four games of the tournament giving up just two runs, are getting clutch hitting and some fine pitching from Mark Goreski, Dad Ken who celebrated his 44th birthday during the tour- (Turn to page 25) Name Barry's Variety Port Perry Auto Glass Port Perry Oldtimers Galley Fish & Seafood Sportsland Seagrave Steel Buildings A.
