30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- NE August 3, 1988 St. John's Church Choir, 1890 These two remarkable old photographs are on dan to the Port Perry Star from St. John's Presbyterian Church. The photo at left shows the church at about . the turn of the century, looking pretty much the way It looks some 90 years later. Note the large house at the left of photo which Is still there on the corner of Queen and Bigelow Streets. The bottom photo is the St. John's Choir and It is be- lleved to be about 100 years old. Unfortunately, the members of the choir are not named on the pho- to, which was taken by W.H. Leonard. And the lo- cation where the photo was taken is not known. If any of our readers have any Iin- formation about the photo, the Identities of the mem- bers of the St. John's Church Choir 1890, call the Star office at 985-7383. Ashburn area news by Florence Ashton In spite of the hot weather, our euchre players enjoyed a good - evening together at the Communi- ty Centre last Thursday evening - with 7 tables of euchre. Winners are as follows: lone hands to Ver- na Draper; ladies first to Rachel Harper and second prize to Peggy Ashton. Men's first to Nora Bentley and second to Art Richardson. 50/50 draw won by Bessie Spencer. Door prize to 'Vera Fawns. Mark August 25th on your calendar, as this will be the next euchre. Everyone is welcome. John and Betty Cincurak have just returned from a most en- joyable 2 week trip to Winnipeg. Jeff Gardiner, Betty's son, flew down to meet them from Thomp- son. They spent 4 days visiting and shopping and sightseeing. The north and west were blessed with rain, sunshine and pleasant temperatures making it a very good holiday. Cecil and Jean Vicars & gran- daughter, Susan, visited with Doug & Florence Ashton last Sunday. Rev. McEntyre's sermon title on Sunday morning was "Sophisticated Samaritans'. We are enjoying very much his sum- mer series on discipleship. Sharmen Porter played a selec- tion on her flute. Thank you to those who provided a refreshing drink for us after the service. We welcome visitors and friends to worship with us through the sum- mer months. There will be no regular classes at Church School throughout August, except for the adult Bible Class. Regular classes will resume again on Sunday, September 4th and the week following we will gather together for a picnic on the grounds of the Community Centre. More about that later. A special service was held at the Glen Major Church last Sun- day evening when they celebrated their 115th Anniversary. The guest minister for the evening was Rev. Dr. Wm. A. Sturgess from Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, Toronto. Special music provided by Mrs. Alma Wilson and Mrs. Jean Parrott. Several people from Ashburn attended the service. Mr. Claude Simmonds very capably has been responsi- ble for the services during July and August since 1966. There ser- vices continue at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday evening throughout August including Labour Da weekend. A warm w is 6x- tended to all those who id.
